Oh yeah you're pretty good looking for a girl
But your back is so broken
And this feeling's still gonna linger on
Until the year 2525 now

Yeah you're pretty good looking for a girl
Your eyes are wide open
And your thoughts have been stolen by the boys
Who took you out and bought you everything you
Want now

Yeah you're pretty good looking
Oh yeah
You're pretty good looking
Yes you're pretty good looking
Oh yeah
For a girl

Lots of people in this world
But I want to be your boy
To me that thought is sounding so absurd
And I don't want to be your toy
Cause you're pretty good looking for a girl
My future's wide open
But this feeling's still gonna linger on
Until I know everything I need to know now

Yeah you're pretty good looking
Oh yeah
You're pretty good looking
Yes you're pretty good looking
Oh yeah
For a girl

here's a thought "you're pretty good looking for a girl" i think it means ok yes she's hot, but i think the "for a girl" is meaning perhaps that she is aware of what's going on around her, that she is intelligent, inquisitive and ambitious. this would be backed up by "your eyes are wide open". She is good AT looking.

"But your thoughts have been stolen by the boys who took you out and bought you everything you want now"

So even though she has all this great potential in her future she doesn't have/get to exploit it because guys will just give her everything she wants anyway so she wont develop her talents.

She wont have to work for anything in her life. I don't know if jack sees this as good or bad but it seems that he is angry at himself for being like the other guys in that he will do stuff for her for nothing: "the thought sounds so absurd and i don't wanna be your toy." so he is angry that he is weak and feels a bit of a sucker (just like every other guy then)

yeah so i don't think he finds guys more attractive.

"your eyes are wide open but your thoughts have been stolen by the boys"

This could mean that she is a very intelligent woman but men dont like that and so they try to make her seem less competent than she really is or they just treat her like she is. Also they shower her with their love for her looks with material things and she has lived a life of luxury taken over by men rather herself.

And I highly doubt 'your back is so broken" means that she has been pregnant a few times. I again DONT KNOW but I think it means that she has just been through a lot with men.

"to that thought is sounding so absurd and I don't wanna" Jack wants her even though thousands of other men do to in his eyes so he feels like he is in the bandwagon.

When he says "Your Pretty Good Looking For A Girl" I think he is maybe sick of girls who get everything they want because mostly of looks and hes not impressed with that. I feel this because in a lot of his other songs particularly "Its Hard To Be a Gentleman" he talks about how he thinks all women "need help climbing up a tree". So it sort of has a satirical meaning towards girls in general.

    Song Fact

The lyric "until the year 2525" is likely a reference to the one-hit wonder duo Zegar and Evans' 1969 number one single 'In The Year 2525.'

Just thought it might be noteworthy, as The White Stripes seem to reference the 60s and 70s quite a bit in their music.

I don't he's gay. I think the speaker in the lyrics is a woman, like in the ones Meg sings. But Jack decided to sing this one himself.

It's ironic that De Stijl starts with a song about feminism (You're Pretty Good Lookin' (For a Girl) ) and ends with a song about smackin' your wife around (Your Southern Can is Mine).

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
