This is an amazing track from the Polythene album, classic Feeder from back in the day! I think think the song is about the evil ways that other people can think and act, and how screwed up the world is. I also find that in the chorus Grant is talking about how he has to keep things inside him and pretend to the outside world that everything is ok... "If I could be all by myself I could be me... If you could see, live with my pain, the thoughts that I keep". I'm not entirely sure of this one, but thats what I get from it anyway.
Sometimes we end up in situations that affect us very deeply and despite the fact we struggle to handle it, others may see you as over-reacting or they just cant relate..you sit dwelling upon your situation and struggles, your mind plays games with you, you start to feel like your going insane, you cant reach the pain in you and end it, but feel on your own you can heal it and with your own efforts you can be yourself...possibly an outside affect and they lie to you telling you its your own faults but you feel otherwise...on your own you can overcome it and you want to shout...you live with my pain and the mind games im having... You feel like you are descending, constantly falling.
Not a happy song at all but absolutly a solid rock song, Grant still finding that amazing melody amongst a dark verse. Very well written lyrics atleast. Great album is 'Swim' too.

These words have always struck me as being particularly significant. An old example given by Kant: in full flight, and feeling the resistance against his wings, the pigeon can't help but wonder how much more quickly and easily he could fly without the air around him holding him back. Question: do we really have a solid identity, separable from our relationships with the people around us? Would I be "me" if I could be all by myself? The rest are the lyrics are typical angst, but this phrase is a real gem. Gives me chills every time I hear it.
Anyways, this song represents the pinnacle of feeder's old-school dirty rock sound. Good stuff!
