I see your phone's been cut off again
Did you shoot all your troubles
Up the vein
Someone saw you
Said you were deadly pale
Another night in hell
Another night in jail

[Chorus]
Looks like the Chinaman's reeling you in
Looks like the horse is gonna win
Looks like the monkeys
Are holding on tight
Say hello to darkness
Goodbye light
Painkiller

And as obscurity beckons the call
It seems oblivion
Is the only thing to cushion your fall
I believe that
Everything is gonna be too late
It all sinks along with the ship you chose too hate

[Chorus]

Now you sold all your possessions
And not only your own
There's miles to go yet
But you're at the end of your road
So you finally surrender
To the needless sleep
Found dead the next mornin'
With your life at your feet

[Chorus]

Sail into darkness goodbye light [Repeat x3]
Yea-eah
Say hello to darkness
Goodbye to light
Say hello
Goodbye
Yea-eah
Goodbye light

I don't exactly know what this song is about, but it's one of backyard babies' best songs ever. and its an unusual quiet one. I suppose it's about like being 50 or something and being in prison (hence the line: "another night in hell, another night in jail") and being at the end of your life ("There's miles to go yet, but you're at the end of your road). In the end of the song, the guy the song is about finally gives up and kills himself ("Found dead next morning"). It's such a great song.

No way! It's about some guy who got stuck with taking drugs, I guess in this case heroin ("someone saw you, said you where deadly pale"). He just can't get a grip of his life, and the law puts him into prison again. And although he is quite young, he doesn't see no sense in his life anymore, so he quits, and commits suicide. Fucking brillant song! Gives me goose bumps everytime I hear it... Wonder why nobody discusses about it?

Oh yeah... Talking about the "heroin-theory": "did you shoot all your troubles up the vein"... That should prove it!

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
