Let Me Lie To You Lyrics
All alone, all alone,
no one to play with.
Your eyes are all swollen from crying..
Feeling sick..
You open it,
and discover your lover between the legs of another,
and he's loving it.
Let me lie to you.
I'll be kind when I deceive you,
but you must never question me.
Just quietly believe...
there, there...
You haven't a care.
I won't ever hurt you, deny or desert you.
Don't ask me again.
Wake up! and listen to thee...
Someone must have told you.
Someone must control you before you can get free.
no one to play with.

One of my fave Whigs songs...
"Someone must have told you someone must control you before you can get free"
Makes me want to hold Dulli in my arms until I fall asleep, and he sneaks out the door...
Another about sexual infidelity. He's saying just believe what I say without question or you will be hurt and I love you and want you to stay. He's managed to separate his love from his lust and believes that if he can pursue his urges without question, they'll be happy. First thing though is believe the lie, it's the only way we can stay together. It's what you don't know wont hurt you or ignorance is bliss, it's a way to have his cake and eat it too. Because he needs that thrill and lying about it is his way of protecting her from his shadow side.
It seems like he's comforting the song's subject, while simultaneously teling her that the same thing will happen with him.
From an interview with Entertainment Weekly (March 15, 2012):
"It’s funny because I remember the song from Congregation that I played in the acoustic tour was called “Let Me Lie to You.” As I was playing it, I was reminded of how I wrote it because I was trying to imitate one of the musical segues on Twin Peaks. They would show the traffic light blowing in the wind. It would change green to yellow to red and the pine trees waving in the background. It’s hard to describe but it definitely transported me back to Twin Peaks, which was very influential on me in more ways than one."
