Dear God Lyrics
Dear God,
Hope you got the letter and
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet
'Cause they don't get enough to eat
From God
I can't believe in you.
Dear God,
Sorry to disturb you, but
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in the amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet
About God,
I can't believe in you.
Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too?!
Dear God,
Don't know if you noticed, but...
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book,
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't, and so do you
Dear God,
I can't believe in...
I don't believe in...
I won't believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
You're always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And it's the same the whole world 'round.
The hurt I see helps to compound
That Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'd perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve.
If there's one thing I don't believe in.....
It's you.....

This song reflects how I feel about 'God' perfectly. I love Sarah Mclachlan's Rarities, B-Sides, and Other Stuff cd.
This song is not about atheism. Andy Partridge of XTC, who originally wrote/performed the song, wrote it after his wife died, IIRC. The song's written from the perspective of someone who believes in God, but who's suffered, and doesn't understand why. They want to disbelieve in a god, but at the same time can't quite do so. So they cry out, wanting to understand why all the hurt and injustice can exist?
For another take on the same question, check out "Prayer" by Disturbed.
Hahahahahahahaha.
That was to the people who think this song is sad.
I don't believe in god and I can tell you I do go through hard times but it has NOTHING to do with the lack of religion, as I'm sure you Christians don't havge perfect lives either.
And the most important thing people need to remember is that this song was originally done by XTC, so whether or not Sarah really does believe in god or not isn't the issue.
Bu this song is amazing anyway.
to address a few points
What does being an athiest have to do with why she wrote this song? If she is or isnt (i dont know), but I am and remain a Catholic and this is MY FAVOURITE SONG by this artist. She sheds a new light on a sad truth of the world. Anyone who says God is perfect may be right, he is all mighty, saves us from sin, etc... but, there are also things that were done in the Bible that even I find questionable. This song is mearly doing exactly what everyone else does: blames the saddnesses...

does anyone realize this song is actually by XTC?
Of course it's by XTC... it's the first song most people think of when they think of XTC. It's kind of weird to hear Sarah McLachlan singing this because I always associate her with more spiritual/religious stuff, but I think she expresses emotion better in her voice than Andy Partridge ever could. Still, I like the XTC version better.
Dear Sarah... Your songs sound good, but the meanings are crap!!! If you say we created God then who created you...evolution?
"You're always letting us humans down." Humans are the ones that let themselves down.
You say you can't believe in God, but are you truly happy? Your song is so negative and absent of hope. You must realize that if you live without God, you die without hope!

umm... keep your religious beliefs to yourself. because i don't think sarah mclachlan plans on reading this and i'm fairly sure no one who will gives a shit.
what? was that too 'angry at all the fucking psycho-christians trying to destroy everything even slightly anti-bible, toting their idiot phrases and dime-store logic because they're too damn afraid of standing up and thinking for themselves' of me? ... sorry.
sounds like someone has some serious issues they need to work out. why the irateness?
I find this song to be really sad...because it's the song of someone who is so bitter that they've knowingly blinded themself. And I know people like that.
These lyrics have a sick and awful irony to them. After going on and on about how wretched an miserable this world is, longing for a God who will DO something to "make it better down here", an inadvertant paradox arises...
"No saints, no sinners, no devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown."
If there are no sinners and no devil, then WHY is the world as screwed up as it is? The song blames God. But "no thorny crown"? Right...yeeeah. God loves us so much that He subjected Himself to the world's cruelty and shed His blood, enduring the ultimate pain and humiliation so that anyone on this screwed up world who would only love Him back could have everlasting life. He LOVES us, the song even makes a REFERENCE to it.
It's really a sad song...
First off I luv Sarah, but I must point something out? If she doesn't believe, then why this letter?
