Cover art for Dear God lyrics by Sarah McLachlan

to address a few points

  1. the song was definitely written by an atheist, check out the extended interview http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=34883466&blogID=198104070
  2. To get hung up on whether or not the author was an atheist or not misses the point of the song entirely. To put it a single sentence, "I can no longer believe in an all good, all knowing, all powerful God, as the suffering of the innocent, often caused by his creation (nature), would not be allowed to happen by such a deity, whose worshippers believe is perfectly good despite his having drowned every baby in the world in the great flood". Or in a few words, the problem of natural evil.
  3. In respect to how happy one can be as an atheist, I think that for the most part it balances out. Day to day, the atheists I know are happier, as they have less guilt and a more positive view of human nature. The death of loved ones can be significantly harder to recover from however.
  4. Whether or not I am an atheist is irrelevant as to the value of any of the above.

What does being an athiest have to do with why she wrote this song? If she is or isnt (i dont know), but I am and remain a Catholic and this is MY FAVOURITE SONG by this artist. She sheds a new light on a sad truth of the world. Anyone who says God is perfect may be right, he is all mighty, saves us from sin, etc... but, there are also things that were done in the Bible that even I find questionable. This song is mearly doing exactly what everyone else does: blames the saddnesses...
