Faith in God Lyrics
it's all right to have faith in god
but when you bend to their rules and their fucking lies
that's when I start to have pity on you.
you're living on a mound of dirt,
but you can't explain your reason for existence
so you blame it on god.
so much hatred in this world and you can't decide
who's pulling the strings
so you figure it's god.
your whole life foreshadows death
and you finally realize you don't want to die alone
so you'll always have god.
it's all right to have faith in god
but when you bend to their rules and their fucking lies
that's when I start to have pity on you.
it's all right to have faith in god
but when you bend to their rules and their fucking lies
that's when I start to have pity on you.
there's people in the world today
who say they're Jewish, Christian and such,
they're all ignorant fools.
they'll tell you you can't have your own way
unless you pay money and dedicate your life
or you'll be damned in hell.
don't be feeble like all of them,
you have your own brain full of thoughts and choices,
so use it don't let them use you.
it's all right to have faith in god
but when you bend to their rules and their fucking lies
that's when I start to have pity on you.

omg, i just randomly came across these lyrics, too, and wow...i'm a christian, and my HUGE pet peeve is when people claim they are christians when they have no idea what that means, or when ...ahhh, just everything that this song is saying. even though it's written by athiests, and probably is not supposed to mean that, that what's i think
Don't get to excited Greg Graffin is a rabid atheist. His self stated mission is to pull young people away from God and to get them to lead secular lives. look at the song from that perspective.

Bad Religion has always been very confrontational about what they think are false and destructive beliefs and tendencies in the masses.

Start from the beginning line, "It's all right to have faith in God..." yes, a lot of people read the song as being just anti-religious, but actually it's pro-critical thinking.

-This is about creationism, religious thought-terminating cliches, and abusive theology (Calvinism and the doctrine of Total Depravity). You blame your misunderstandings about reality, your frustrations with life on God, thinking that you can never achieve happiness or discover purpose because you're waiting on some trumpet from heaven.
"so much hatred in this world and you can't decide who's pulling the strings so you figure it's god."
You are born into a storm of hatred, you get caught up in nationalism, racism and other bigotry, thinking that God wants you to hate certain people, you get marched into the army, you chant the pledge of allegiance, you sign on the dotted line and you kill for this system of bigotry that you settled for.
"your whole life foreshadows death and you finally realize you don't want to die alone so you'll always have god."
This is a memento mori, a reminder to make something of your life so that this empty consolation won't be the only thing left for you. This is basically giving "I'll be done being a selfish bastard when I can no longer act on my worst impulses," and that's no way to live life.
"there's people in the world today who say they're Jewish, Christian and such, they're all ignorant fools.

Speaks for itself. Don't be another follower with a bent back looking down and afraid of knowledge and afraid of your own thoughts, is what he's saying. Greg Graffin wrote about overcoming the limbic system in his "punk manifesto". The doctrine of hell as many religious institutions preach it is meant to scare the wayward back into the pews, and to scare their coins back into their coffers. It's not just religious groups that use the human limbic system to their advantage anymore though, but politicians and influencers trying to sell you stuff.
Huh "rabid atheist" - Greg actually prefers the term naturalist and is agnostic. He's just a human being, but as much as you hate them apparently, you can't deny that the lyrics of Bad Religion are brilliant, thought provoking and original. I'm a Christian today. But to tell the truth I am glad I discovered Bad Religion in my 20s, at a defining point in my life when I could have either settled for a normal life with my brain and thoughts dictated by the world we live in ... or chose a different path. I'm glad I chose to question things instead of settling for predetermined answers.
How stupid are some of you Greg Graffin is an Atheist he has stated it bluntly at concerts so is Brett and Jay
Greg Graffin created a god in his image and chose not believe in that one. Greg Graffin is doing the same thing he acuses religion of doing. give me your money {buy my record} so I can remove you from your faith. Mr Graffin is a self avowed atheist and was given a lifetime achievement award for the spreading of atheism through his music and teaching. He indoctrinates youth who are searching for a direction and this Humanist "Punk Manifesto" can be very appealing. But the selfishness of it all just leads to personal destruction. Bad Religion is dishonest and agenda...

wow i just randomly came across these lyrics and they are everything i believe.... amazing... haha
actually, only Mr Brett is an Atheist. Greg G is an Agnostic, and Jay is a Christian. Don't know the rest though.
This song means a lot to me, about how people put their faith in god for all the wrong reasons, such as "Final Salvation" and such.
i agree. : )
Im an Atheist and i agree. It makes mr so mad when a Religious person gets on my case for it. Then when i ask do they go to Church they say no. They only do the whole god thing to save themselves from HELL. Even points out how the people who beleive in GOD have a closed minds to the rest of the world."you have your own brain full of thoughts and choices" They rather be told how to think and not rationalize anything. Anyone who loved these lyrics would love Epiphany on "the Proccess of Beleif" album. Bad Religion is such a good band and realy make you think about the lyrics, i know few bands that do this.
I like how the song refers to "god haters" as having faith in god because "god haters" are theists, not atheists as many christians seem to think.
I totally disagree with these lyrics. It's so obvious from Bad Religion's lyrics (and many other Christianity-bashing bands) that they know the Bible but haven't really lived among or spent time with full-on Christians that really follow. The complaints they make about the belief and their deconstruction of it is pretty childish and cliched...it's such an old and outdated argument. Maybe if they were complaining about the Catholic church during the Middle Ages...
"your whole life foreshadows death and you finally realize you don't want to die alone so you'll always have God."
Uh-oh...big danger sign. I don't want to die alone! Well, when you discover there is a God (He says knock and the door will be opened to you, and I know from experience that God is there) who created you, of course you want to be with Him.
"they'll tell you you can't have your own way unless you pay money and dedicate your life or you'll be damned in hell."
No church I've been to insists that you pay money...in fact, one of the tenets of Christian faith is a rejection of obsession with material wealth. The idea is that if you are a Christian you must be giving and generous and willing to give up all your money if necessary -- God will provide, and money is not a problem. I'm not saying people don't abuse it and I'm not saying there aren't people in authority in churches around the world that will focus on the money, but you can hardly complain that music is a dead concept because one artist made a bad record, can you? As for the "you're going to hell" approach -- I don't see that around any more. Ever. Maybe it's just the city I live in or something...
"don't be feeble like all of them, you have your own brain full of thoughts and choices, so use it don't let them use you."
I sure do have my own brain full of ideas and choices. I don't see myself as a closed-minded person at all. I am a Christian, and no one is using me...never have I felt in my walk so far that anyone is using me. They have nothing to gain by my following...the only thing on your mind after you're saved is really a desire to go out in the world and help people.
The churches bands like this rail against are obviously extremely dogmatic and perhaps spiritually dead.. the Christians I know who are living humble lives and seeing results from their faith and work are open-minded and open to suggestion but firm and unwavering about what their beliefs are, as they try to love and serve others.
"Mr. Brett" + co. are intelligent and intellectually inclined, but they're on the wrong path..
@Cherub Rock Greg's not saying "don't believe in God" but instead learn, discover, and make up your own mind instead of making quick assumptions and relying on prejudices, like an ancient heathen attributing thunder to Thor or lightning to Zeus. Learn what makes the weather happen, learn psychology and figure out your own mind instead of relying on religion as cheap (or, not so cheap) psychotherapy, study politics and history so you don't fall for religious-fascist propaganda ("who's pulling the strings"), and learn to embrace your earthly mortality and make the best of your time to make the world a...

If you can do all those things and have faith in God, then more power to you!
"I like how the song refers to "god haters" as having faith in god because "god haters" are theists, not atheists as many christians seem to think. "
Actually you are wrong. If somebody believes that god exists and hates him, then he is a theist. If a person does not believe a god exists and hates the followers of such a silly concept... he is indeed an atheist.

lol and how is this not your subconscious? how is this nothing more than feeling good for finding a crutch? Neuroscience is showing that there is actually a place in the brain that is responsible for "religious" experiances. Also how is your religious experiance any more true or any better than the religious experiance of say... a hindu? a buddhist? or taoist? or a muslim? and if there is a god who says its your christian god? there are literaly hundreds of thousands of gods believed in or that have been believed in... your god has no more credibility than any of the others.
religion comes down to culture, it comes down to societal memes evolving and passing down from generation to generation. I suggest you read up on memetics, very interesting indeed.
religion is something that the human social animal has developed to create harmony in the society we need to survive and thrive in, just like governemtn, currency, laws, ect ect.
Eventually we will outgrow this.
i think it's just saying that it's perfectly fine to be religious and spiritual and have faith in god, but there are so many people who do it for the wrong reasons.
