Since your mother cast her spell
Every kiss has left a bruise
You've been raiding too much meaning from existence
Now your head is used and sore
And the forecast is for more
Memories falling, like falling rain
Falling rain
Every view they hold on you is
A piano, out of tune
You're an angel
You're a demon
You're just human
Now your world has turned to trash
Broken windows on the past
Take that child, and teach him senseless
Damage the dream, damage the dream
I feel nothing, I feel nothing at all
I feel nothing at all
In this gloomy, haunted place
All the feelings are of shame
All the windows have been broken by the children
So the wind screams up the stairs
Slams the doors, and rattles chairs
I wish we weren't conceived in violence
Damage the dream, damage the dream
The magic is broken
The house is in ruins
Your memory's one-sided
The side that you're choosing feels nothing
Feels nothing at all
We feel nothing at all
Every kiss has left a bruise
You've been raiding too much meaning from existence
Now your head is used and sore
And the forecast is for more
Memories falling, like falling rain
Falling rain
A piano, out of tune
You're an angel
You're a demon
You're just human
Now your world has turned to trash
Broken windows on the past
Take that child, and teach him senseless
Damage the dream, damage the dream
I feel nothing, I feel nothing at all
I feel nothing at all
All the feelings are of shame
All the windows have been broken by the children

I wish we weren't conceived in violence
I love this song because, to me it mean realizing that you will carry traits from your parents, and no matter how much you try, your past will always come back a little. To me, this song means realizing your'e a bit damaged but so is the person you love..and then working from there.
Yeah Tim Booth revealed at a gig I was at in Glasgow that he wrote this about his friend who was abused as a child.
i wasn't conceived in violence. i grew up surrounded by it.
Love to you. No your task is that it stops with you and does not keep going to the new generations.

I always thought that this song was about a person who was abused as a child and is looking back at memories of it. “Every view they hold on you’s, a piano out of tune” means that the person was always thought of as something worthless, and unwanted. “Broken windows on the past” means that the persons view of the past has been damaged in some way, that they see their memories with hatred. This idea is also supported by “your memory’s one-sided” and “all the feelings are of shame”, the later suggesting that the person may blame herself for what happened. I think that “damage the dream” means that this persons hopes and dreams were prevented from being accomplished, whether physically or mentally. An alternative to this would be that the ‘dream’ of having a child and raising it happily has been ignored, and the child’s upbringing had been damaged through abuse.
This is only an idea though, and I know this song can be interpreted in many ways, but it just sounds like remembering an abusive childhood to me, I’m not entirely sure why. Either way, it’s and awesome song!
You're an angel You're a demon You're just human
It is exactly how you feel when you discover that that person is not perfect, but you still love her.
I think it's about a person once abused as a child by a relative. Stop feeling guilty, feel nothing (about it) at all. Damage the dream, tell what has happened.
I believe it should be reading and not raiding. That's just a thick British accent.
@komashu I always thought it was "reading" as well, until I saw the lyrics online & listened closely, realized it did sound like "raiding." So I sent a message online to Tim Booth (James's singer/lyricist) asking him which was correct, and me messaged me back: "raiding" Nice to know, because it was bugging me!
