Seven Seas Lyrics
stab a sorry heart
with your favourite finger
paint the whole world blue
and stop your tears from stinging
hear the cavemen singing
good news they're bringing
seven seas
swimming them so well
glad to see
my face among them
kissing the tortoise shell
a longing for some fresher feeling
belonging or just forever kneeling
where's the sense in stealing
without the grace to be it
seven seas
swimming them so well
glad to see
my face among them
kissing the tortoise shell
burning my bridges
and smashing my mirrors
turning to see if you're cowardly
burning the witches and mother religious
you'll strike the matches and shower me
in water games
washing the rocks below
taught and tamed
in time with tear flow
with your favourite finger
paint the whole world blue
and stop your tears from stinging
hear the cavemen singing
good news they're bringing
swimming them so well
glad to see
my face among them
kissing the tortoise shell
belonging or just forever kneeling
where's the sense in stealing
without the grace to be it
swimming them so well
glad to see
my face among them
kissing the tortoise shell
and smashing my mirrors
turning to see if you're cowardly
burning the witches and mother religious
you'll strike the matches and shower me
washing the rocks below
taught and tamed
in time with tear flow

The lyrics leave a lot open for interpretation. My take is that it's about leaving behind regrets, conventions, and religion and striking to see a new perspective from the seven seas; and see just how big the world is and how long time goes on, and see your existence from that perspective.
Stop feeling sorry and sad
Go out to the seas
Stop feeling sorry and sad
Humans have lived for thousands of years and persisted, they've taken great risks, sailing out on the seas
Rejuvenated by the feeling of freedom, adventure and perspective on the seas
We all have the instinct and desire for a sense of meaning and belonging What's the sense in getting the meaning from someone else, without actually feelingi t and making it your own?
Rejuvenated by the feeling of freedom, adventure and perspective on the seas
Letting go of religion and conventional way of thinking
Going on this physical and spiritual journey with someone
Letting go of religion and conventional way of thinking
The new perspective on life makes you see the human sorrow in a different way.
I really like this interpretation of the song.
I really like this interpretation of the song.
I always thought the line "paint your whole world blue and stop your tears from stinging" was more downbeat than that though, reflecting the way that when we're sad the whole world seems a less happy place. Perversely this can be a comfort because being sad in a world where contentment is possible offers hope - and disappointment - and envy. Holding on to this blue painted world imprisons us in depression.

@sm92037 Yes I love the inspiration the song gives by saying let go of conventional ways, don’t feel boxed in - stopping worrying about what everybody tells you - and take life and look for opportunity out there - people have done this for ages before you - why not you

I'm more of a lyrics fan myself, but just the mood of this song gets me - very meloncholy. Are the lyrics possibly a metaphor for death? i've no idea really, quality song though
Possibly the best album of the 80's. Perfect.
Im not that sure about the song meaning but in my opinion it seems that its about getting out there and doing something that your really want to do in life, no matter what that decision may bring you. The chorus especially seems to be saying it, with the lines : seven seas swimming them so well glad to see my face among them kissing the tortoise shell
it seems to me when you listen to the verse's and then the chorus he seems like he saying that no matter what has happened he's glad he out there doing what he wants and that he's happy with his life for making that decision

This has always seemed to me like it was probably relating to Charles Darwin's voyage on the Beagle, especially the Galapagos. But I look at the lyrics, and don't see more than a couple of lines that really support that. So maybe it is, maybe not.
The mood seems to be very positive, but the whole lyrics I can't really explain...
Help Us Here...!!
This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.
Would you really describe it as "melancholy"? I think there's something quite uplifting about this song, especially the chorus. Not to the same extent as "Silver", but even so..."Ocean Rain" as an album is quite hopeful, I think. I'm not really sure what it means, but the imagery is beautiful.
ach! how is it nobody's commented even THIS yet! This is certainly one of their absollute finest songs. Any ideas what it means? that's why I came here...
