Cover art for Seven Seas lyrics by Echo and the Bunnymen

The lyrics leave a lot open for interpretation. My take is that it's about leaving behind regrets, conventions, and religion and striking to see a new perspective from the seven seas; and see just how big the world is and how long time goes on, and see your existence from that perspective.

stab a sorry heart with your favourite finger

Stop feeling sorry and sad

paint the whole world blue

Go out to the seas

and stop your tears from stinging

Stop feeling sorry and sad

hear the cavemen singing good news they're bringing

Humans have lived for thousands of years and persisted, they've taken great risks, sailing out on the seas

seven seas swimming them so well glad to see my face among them kissing the tortoise shell

Rejuvenated by the feeling of freedom, adventure and perspective on the seas

a longing for some fresher feeling belonging or just forever kneeling where's the sense in stealing without the grace to be it

We all have the instinct and desire for a sense of meaning and belonging What's the sense in getting the meaning from someone else, without actually feelingi t and making it your own?

seven seas swimming them so well glad to see my face among them kissing the tortoise shell

Rejuvenated by the feeling of freedom, adventure and perspective on the seas

burning my bridges and smashing my mirrors

Letting go of religion and conventional way of thinking

turning to see if you're cowardly

Going on this physical and spiritual journey with someone

burning the witches and mother religious

Letting go of religion and conventional way of thinking

you'll strike the matches and shower me

in water games washing the rocks below taught and tamed in time with tear flow

The new perspective on life makes you see the human sorrow in a different way.

I really like this interpretation of the song.

I always thought the line "paint your whole world blue and stop your tears from stinging" was more downbeat than that though, reflecting the way that when we're sad the whole world seems a less happy place. Perversely this can be a comfort because being sad in a world where contentment is possible offers hope - and disappointment - and envy. Holding on to this blue painted world imprisons us in depression.

This doesn't fit as neatly with the cavemen line as your interprestation, though, and generally I like your...

@sm92037 Yes I love the inspiration the song gives by saying let go of conventional ways, don’t feel boxed in - stopping worrying about what everybody tells you - and take life and look for opportunity out there - people have done this for ages before you - why not you
