Further into the fog I fall
Well, I was just following you
When you said, "Do as I do and scrap your fey ways"
Dial-A-Cliché
"Grow up, be a man, and close your mealy-mouth!"
Dial-A-Cliché
Dial-A-Cliché
Dial-A-Cliché
But the person underneath
Where does he go?
Does he slide by the wayside?
Or does he just die?
And you find that you've organized
Your feelings, for people
Who didn't like you then
And do not like you now
But still you say, "Do as I do and scrap your fey ways"
Dial-A-Cliché
"Grow up, be a man, and close your mealy-mouth!"
Dial-A-Cliché
"The safe way is the only way"
"There's always time to change, son"
I've changed, but I'm in pain

I find this song peculiar because the whole album viva hate was about his feelings after the smiths broke up and a return to his reflections of the past . This song imposes what i believe morrissey was viewed as even before the smiths . He was always looked at as fey and too bookish , which morrissey found and im sure many do as so cliche you cant be rid of it . This is morrissey saying to people to be rid of them be yourself whatever that might be. Dont simply dial a cliche .
Scrap your fey ways? Need any one comment further?
Thanks, EddieB. As with all else, this is just My Humble Opine...<br /> <br /> This is one of his 'prettiest' songs, as I often wake up singing it.<br /> <br /> Growing up with a manic Brit dad myself, I think you're right.<br /> <br /> My dad used to comment on my sexuality, as if his words might shape it.<br /> <br /> He often came up with such terms.<br /> <br /> "Fey-way", or fag, gay way. My dad was often quite verbally clever.<br /> <br /> 'Scrap your fey ways' rings, to me, his dad's request (hope?) to stop being so gay-ish.<br /> <br /> Whatever that means.<br /> <br /> There is no doubt, to me, that this song was slanted (aimed) towards his dad, as was "Late Night, Maudlin St."<br /> <br /> Again, IMHO.<br /> <br /> Thanks, Eddie!<br /> <br /> Wayne

Perhaps?
Perhaps. I'm wrong often. I followed your link, read the clip, pondered, and no, I think that's a stretch.<br /> <br /> But then, you're probably spot-on, as only he knows what he really meant!<br /> <br /> regards...<br /> <br /> Wayne<br /> <br />
i always thought this was morrissey having a dig at his dad, especially when he says: 'grow up, be a man, and close your mealy-mouth!' it sounds like his dad shouting at him. awww..... i just want to give him a big ol' hug now....
about being told to change to someone you are not and what happens possibly when you do
I also think this song is about his father, who wanted a more traditional type of son, not the little singer dancing on the table. It's funny when breeders don't get the offspring they were expecting. They forced people into existence without consent and don't deserve to get what they want.
