You Can Never Go Home Lyrics
I don't know what I'm searching for;
I never have opened the door.
Tomorrow might find me at last
Turning my back on the past
But time will tell of stars that fell
A million years ago.
Memories can never take you back home, sweet home,
You can never go home anymore.
All my life I never really knew me 'til today.
Now I know why, I'm just another step along the way.
I lie awake for hours, I'm just waiting for the sun.
When the journey we are making has begun
Don't deny the feeling that is stealing through your heart,
Every happy ending needs to have a start.
All my life I never really knew me 'til today.
Now I know why, I'm just another step along the way.
Weep no more for treasures you've been searching for in vain
'Cos the truth is gently falling with the rain,
High above the forest lie the pastures of the sun
Where the two that learned the secret now are one.
I don't know what I'm searching for;
I never have opened the door.
Tomorrow might find me at last
Turning my back on the past
But time will tell of stars that fell
A million years ago.
Memories can never take you back home, sweet home,
You can never go home anymore.

Memories can never take you back home, sweet home,
You can never go home anymore.

What a wonderful coincidence that one of my all-time favorite authors, Thomas Wolfe, has one of his more popular works, You Can't Go Home Again, used as inspiration for one of my all-time favorite groups, The Moody Blues.
"You Can Never Go Home Again" is a beautiful, haunting song that I can listen to repeatedly for hours.
It hits its sweet-spot with the guitar refrain that follows this passage . . .
Weep no more for treasures you've been searching for in vain 'Cos the truth is gently falling with the rain,

Justin Hayward has authored many wonderful rock ballads, but this one is probably his best. Too bad the production of the recording leaves something to be desired.
@phinegan Disagree about the production. To me it feels a little like a Led Zeppelin track - soft ballad combined with a heavy chorus and middle 8. Love the guitar! One of my personal favourites.

This is one of at least a couple of songs Justin Hayward wrote about his father's passing. The other notable one was 'New Horizon's' which also combined an homage to his new family (wife and daughter). He also lost his brother somewhere around this time, so perhaps an element of that here too.
@SAJK I've been looking for the personal history of Justin Hayward, as I'd like to know what in his life caused him the pain you can see etched on his face so much of the time, back in the day of course. The pain from whence sprang so much great music, yet which itself is etched with that pain & melancholy. Any suggestions?

It's obvious what the song means; it reflects the angst of life with which we've all dealt, especially those of us who came of age listening to this music while exploring the furtherest reaches of our minds.
