This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Reflected in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
Once the world was new
Our bodies felt the morning dew
That greets the brand new day
We couldn't tear ourselves away
I wonder if you care
I wonder if you still remember
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
And when the music plays
And when the words are touched with sorrow
When the music plays
I hear the sound I had to follow
Once upon a time
Once beneath the stars
The universe was ours
Love was all we knew
And all I knew was you
I wonder if you know
I wonder if you think about it
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
And when the music plays
And when the words are touched with sorrow
When the music plays
And when the music plays
I hear the sound I had to follow
Once upon a time

Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Mirrored in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you think about me
Once upon a time

Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

Page

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

Sunglasses at Night

In the 1980s, sunglasses were a common fashion for people who wanted to adopt a "tough guy" persona (note all the cop shows from that era -- Simon & Simon, Miami Vice, etc. -- where the lead characters wore shades). So I think this song is about a guy who wears shades as a way of hiding his insecurity after learning that his girlfriend is cheating on him. He's trying to pretend that he's a "tough guy" to hide the fact that his girlfriend's affair is disturbing him.
Yeah, its kind of obvious what its about; recalling a wonderful love that was part of your life's fabric but not one main relationship (the sound you HAD to follow... you were together but the universe had other plans). Rather than getting all messed up with the pain of past or lost love, to me it reassures the listener that you CAN think and feel okay about an ex.
It reminds us that there will always be someone penning their sorrow to help us to remember the good times while tapping into the little bit of heartache that might remain to help us to value what goodness there can be in being in love with someone, even if it has to be for a shorter time than we'd like.
"When the music plays I hear the sound I had to follow.
While I agree this song is about the band this is also symbolic of hearing songs you can relate too about failed relationships (including this one ironically).
When I hear this amazing song I hear a story that I had to follow. Relationships that you thought would work but ended, and then sometimes late at night seperated by years from that person, you can't help but think "I wonder what they're doing and if they ever think about me in the slightest?"
At that point it becomes very sad to think about.
That said, the song rarely fails to bring me to tears. The song reminds me that I'm very thankful for the loves I've been fortunate to share.
This song was written by Justin Hayward and is a literal interpretation of what he went through with his significant other. When the Moody Blues offered him to be a permanent member of the band, the woman he was with gave him an ultimatum, telling him, it's me or the band. A year or so later after becoming a member of the band is when he wrote this song...he still thinks about her, but "when the music plays, he hears the sound he had to follow."
@loehlebm Thank you.
The song is indeed based on a true story, and naturally the woman the song is about eventually heard it and recognized herself in it. She was very moved, to say the least. So moved, she sued the moody blues for royalties for using her story in a song without permission. Needless to say, it was thrown out of court. Twice. Yes, she was a scorpio.
@siltsunrise I don't suppose it's a secret, who was she?
I completely agree with jbaronde. Does anyone know the actual story behind it, or if the emotions expressed here are collective of the entire bands experience ? thanks
It means I miss a great woman that I still love a little, but I have no idea where she is and wonder if she ever thinks the same about me.
This song is about a lost love. They're remembering all the good times with them, yet they kinda miss them. They wonder what ever happened to them and if they ever think of them....I'm pretty much resumming what jbaronde said. This song holds a meaning to me because I know this guy whom moved away to England. I wonder what he's doing and if he thinks of me too.
jbaronde and TasChiBandGirl hit it right on the head. he remembers the great times he once had with a girl. he remembers intricate things about when he was with this girl. he remembers music from the times he was with her and often wonders where she is now and if she still thinks about him too. man can i relate to this one, as cheesy as that sounds.
I don't know if anyone has ever seen the music video for this but it shows a lady remembering the great times she had back when the band was begining with the lead singer. Years later the others members forced them to break up and now in the late 80's she has a family of her own and wonders if he ever thought about what might have been.
