why has no one commented on this song yet? when the chorus reaches it's pinnacle of 'there is no real underground' it's the sound of pure ecstacy. and he made it sitting on the floor of a bare house with no fancy-ass high fallootin studio equipment. the man was a genius. to me, this is the greatest example of the beautiful music that this world lost the night it lost jeff buckley.
My favourite Jeff Buckley song! It's just so raw and powerful!! The meaning is kinda hard to listen to because i find it very sad. "You're a slave to it all now" is such an emotional line, he must have gone through hell at times - i think he began to feel like a commodity near the end of his brief career and it annoyed him. The "happy, happy..." part at the end is actually both disturbing and funny, because it shows he could still laugh at himself yet you get a sense of 'this is just a front - oneday i'm gonna crack'.
This is, to me, Jeff's most disturbing songs. But it's also one of few where I could actually envision the finished version. Would've been beautiful, I love this version all the same, though.
I love the "ooooh ahhhh bit". Amazing.
The the bit about "Paradise Rock" in the chorus is great. the lyrical content, such as "sick of all the Vomit Childhood, not a trampoline..." and "Not even a slave to your father", seem VERY personal.
And the "Happy" ending is one of the most sarcastic and cleverly done messages I've heard in a song. Cobain tried to do this kinda of thing of showing how he feels in his songs. But I much prefer Jeff
Absolutely agree that this album was set to shake a generation in the way that Sgt. Peppers did. The raging, kaleidoscope fever dream vision of a still budding musical genius.

this song is so deep and powerful, i cry each and everytime i listen to this song. it really hurts knowing that jeff is gone.

I think I read in Dream Brother, the bio of Jeff and Tim Buckley, that this song was compared to spirit and vision of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. That the song was at that level of recording genius. Jeff was going to change everything, and in a sense, he did. Miss him terribly.
This song was moving in a direction not unlike Sgt. Pepper meets Syd Barrett, musically. A singularly frightening piece of inspired madness.
