Lovelife Lyrics

You are the one
In your concrete arms I adore you
Dirty and dear
Block out the sun
In your twists and turns I invade
You show me no fear
We blow around like tiny leaves in a big storm
Finding there's nothing left to breathe or to keep warm
You ebb and flow and your rhythm beats my head
Leave me alone while you swallow up your dead
You are the one
You cradle me and kill
Caressing my face Leave me undone
You suffocate and have me
This is the place
Every door conceals a dream and a nightmare
Nothing is ever really pure in the stale air
And when it's dark everything becomes more clear
Lie in the park when I want to have you near
You are the one In your concrete arms
I adore you
Dusty and dear
Block out the sun In your twists and turns I invade
You show me no fear
Left it unsung I shall leave but I'll return
Poison my lungs, my blood is full of lead
Things unsaid
My love for you still burns

Yeah, you're right, it is.

To me it's about 2 lovers, loving each other desperately, to a violent extent. To the edge, I guess.

This is probably among the creepiest songs ever. Dreamy (in my opinion, it's the very definition of Dream Pop), uplifting music, terribly pained lyrics about two lovers in a really turbulent relationship ("every door conceals a dream and a nightmare") in which love and hate walk together, but somehow the love is stronger ("my love for you still burns"). Even after death, like the above guys said.

Very dismal song. I don't even play it that often.

I agree with each of you--clearly an agonized love song, but I think there's another metaphor at hand. Apply the notion of a city to the song. She's in love with a city as well. Or it's just one sweeping tribute to a city disguised as a love song. Read it over in that light. I'd like to know what you think.

While I might be way off base, I feel confident Mikki would confirm that metaphor is there.

Oh and yes, it's a gorgeous sirenic song.

ChrisBayer your interpretation makes a lot of sense. in my view, the tone of the lyrics, when heard in that light, fits the music better than the darker interpretation of the lyrics suggested in earlier posts. i see the song in a whole new light now. Thanks!

This revelation comes as a shock to me. While I find it hard to believe one would sing with such emotion about a city like that it the lyrics make perfect sense with it. Much more than with 2 lovers.

I guess I should thank you but I'm kinda disappointed about this. This was always a very special song to me because of its enigmatic darkness, the contours between love and hate, and now all the magic's gone. My gf also likes this song alot, I think I won't tell her this though, not to ruin it for her as well.

My Interpretation

this is the first lush song i ever heard back in 1994 and its still by far my favorite. the guitars flow and Mikki's voice puts me in a trance. i miss this band. i agree with Stroaters....these two lovers {weather it was mikki and emma hypotheticaly} loved each other with so much that {im assuming} that one passes and the love will always continue...like Mikki says at the end "left it unsung, i shall leave but i'll return" those darn shoegazers..she is probably talking about a puppy or something...LOL
