This is probably among the creepiest songs ever. Dreamy (in my opinion, it's the very definition of Dream Pop), uplifting music, terribly pained lyrics about two lovers in a really turbulent relationship ("every door conceals a dream and a nightmare") in which love and hate walk together, but somehow the love is stronger ("my love for you still burns"). Even after death, like the above guys said.
Very dismal song. I don't even play it that often.
I agree with each of you--clearly an agonized love song, but I think there's another metaphor at hand. Apply the notion of a city to the song. She's in love with a city as well. Or it's just one sweeping tribute to a city disguised as a love song. Read it over in that light. I'd like to know what you think.

While I might be way off base, I feel confident Mikki would confirm that metaphor is there.

ChrisBayer your interpretation makes a lot of sense. in my view, the tone of the lyrics, when heard in that light, fits the music better than the darker interpretation of the lyrics suggested in earlier posts.
i see the song in a whole new light now. Thanks!

This revelation comes as a shock to me. While I find it hard to believe one would sing with such emotion about a city like that it the lyrics make perfect sense with it. Much more than with 2 lovers.

I guess I should thank you but I'm kinda disappointed about this. This was always a very special song to me because of its enigmatic darkness, the contours between love and hate, and now all the magic's gone. My gf also likes this song alot, I think I won't tell her this though, not to ruin it for her as well.

Stroaters-the song could still be special to you like before. just one new possible interpretation shouldn't have to dispel the magic.

one might even go deeper and interpret it as a love song/tribute to a person, but by likening the person to a city as a metaphor.

i feel ya though--it's now harder to think of it as a love song addressed to a person. Many years ago, I included the song on a mix that i compiled for my s.o. who is now my spouse. if i had thought of the song as a tribute to...

Oh and yes, it's a gorgeous sirenic song.
