Shine Lyrics

I can see it in your eyes
What I know in my heart is true
That our love it has faded
like the summer run through
So we'll walk down the shoreline
one last time together
Feel the wind blow our wanderin' hearts like a feather
But who knows what's waiting in the wings of time
Dry your eyes
We gotta go where we can shine

Don't be hiding in sorrow or clinging to the past
With your beauty so precious
and the season so fast
No matter how cold the horizon appear
or how far the first night
when I held you near
You gotta rise from these ashes
like a bird of flame
Step out of the shadow
we've gotta go where we can shine

For all that we struggle
for all we pretend
It don't come down to nothing
except love in the end
And ours is a road
that is strewn with goodbyes
And as it unfolds
as it all unwinds
Remember your soul is the one thing you can't compromise
Take my hand
we're gonna go where we can shine
we're gonna go where we can shine
we're gonna go where we can shine

And look and look
Through the windows of midnight
moonfoam and silver

this is yet another song that speaks such power and emotion. This song has that much feeling behind it, that all power inside me explodes to shout and sing that yes we are gonna go where we can shine...

When I first read the lyrics to this song (I read it before I heard it) I was blown away. I just KNEW it was inspired by my absolute favorite poem--Ephemera by William Butler Yeats. This poem and many other Yeaets poems can make me cry (no other poet does this for me) and move me more than I can say--the same way DG's songs do. Especially when I'm going through a break up, or falling in love, or feeling nostalgic. A few years later a friend of mine actually met DG and asked him for me if it was inspired by this poem--and he said yes! It was so cool. Anyway--check out the poem and other Yeats poems--you'll see how much DG is inspired by him in many of his songs. Plus Yeats is just amazing on his own...

You are all so wrong - you're just barely skimming the surface of these lyrics! When he sings "our love has faded" he isn't saying goodbye. He is aknowledging that relationships need work and that the mundane nature of life can dull even the best relationships. He doesn't abandon his love, though. Instead he says "let's go where we can shine." He knows you can't just leave your soulmate, because "your soul is the one that you can't compromise." And that true love can survive the rough times, because "for all that we struggled, for all we pretend, it don't come down to nothing except love in the end."

"Take my hand", he says, not farewell. That is true love.

you're 100% right!!

Everytime I hear this song i want to cry. Its about having to say goodbye to someone you love so much because your lives are taking you in different directions. David is trying to comfort his love by telling her everything will be o.k, and that this is what they have to do to save themselves. Feel the wind blow our wanderin' hearts like a feather But who knows what's waiting in the wings of time Dry your eyes We gotta go where we can shine

I have to admit that this precious song means more to me than velcro runners. This song stews my courage, battles my insecurities, and for those two reasons alone I have never been so grateful.

I find this song to be sweet... mostly because they are willing to say goodbye instead of refusing to admit that something is wrong or address the fact that their relationship won't last. One of the hardest things about liking or loving someone is the realization that they may leave you without an explanation or even a simple goodbye.

ucaminax, thankyou so much! you're right, Ephemera is a fantastic poem, possibly more emotional and passionate than Shine, but I dunno. I think both DG and WB Yates are talking about being separated emotionally as well as physically, and talking as if they will carry on to have this separation for some time, is isn't a "I'm your knight and I'm saving you" its more of a "the bravest, most courageous thing I can do right now is to let you go" I know we're meant to stay on the subject of the music, but lets not! what do people think of this whole idea, is it possible to love someone so much that you let them go? or does love mean holding tight to someone and not loosening grip despite physical / emotional barriers? Please respond! R

This is a reply to a comment you made on 12/25/05 so who knows if you will even get this, but I wanted to leave my opinion. You asked if it's possible to love someone so much that you let them go or do you hold on tightly, for all your worth, despite physical and emotional barriers? I believe now, as I always have, that when you love someone, you naturally want to place their needs before yours. I also believe that love shouldn't hurt. It's not the love that hurts you. It's the...
