Off The Hook Lyrics
All around the room your things are placed
And next to you, he fills the space
And so it seems your saving grace
Is only saving face
The pictures of the two of you
On holiday, on honeymoon
You thought that he was wanting you
But he was only wanting you
To let him
Off the hook
He was your imaginary friend
You were partners till the end
Then something bends and then it breaks
Your worst mistake
Accepting enemies on bended knees
A litany of tragedies
You're vexed, it seems you're hexed
And after sex, he expects you'll let him
Off the hook
Till something that you heard
While you were sleeping
Left you shaken while he stirred
When you awaken, you will
Make him eat his words right
Off the hook
And line
Every time
The credit card receipts, the dirty sheets
Souvenirs of men who cheat
It all makes sense
With each offense
You wanted to believe him
He could get away with murder one
And you would clean the smoking gun
With every crime, you bought each line
But not this time
You'll make him eat his words
'Cause something that you heard
While you were sleeping
Left you shaken while he stirred
When you awaken you will make him
Eat his words while he's alone
'Cause you won't be around
And from now on the phone stays
Off the hook
And line
Every time
And next to you, he fills the space
And so it seems your saving grace
Is only saving face
On holiday, on honeymoon
You thought that he was wanting you
But he was only wanting you
To let him
Off the hook
You were partners till the end
Then something bends and then it breaks
Your worst mistake
Accepting enemies on bended knees
A litany of tragedies
You're vexed, it seems you're hexed
And after sex, he expects you'll let him
Off the hook
While you were sleeping
Left you shaken while he stirred
When you awaken, you will
Make him eat his words right
Off the hook
And line
Every time
Souvenirs of men who cheat
It all makes sense
With each offense
You wanted to believe him
And you would clean the smoking gun
With every crime, you bought each line
But not this time
You'll make him eat his words
While you were sleeping
Left you shaken while he stirred
When you awaken you will make him
Eat his words while he's alone
'Cause you won't be around
And from now on the phone stays
Off the hook
And line
Every time

i love this song. it's so sad though.. not like it tears me up, but it just has a sobering effect. like he cheats on her and stuff, and she still waits with him. i dunno. :-/
This is about the coolest song in the world sound-wise, and it's one of the smartest lyrically. It's trademark BNL--smart, witty, well-crafted, and deceptively simple-sounding.
luckypaifofshoes is right. This song is 99th percentile. The lyrics are pretty self explanatory, but nonetheless savvy, and the music is pristine.
i agree with u all.. a very nice song... jsut to sit back with a cupa and a smoke and say.. "fuck.. wheres my life going"
One of their most underrated songs--great wordplay. You get a sense that these are real people instead of the standard "ooh baby, I love you" song lyrics you get with most artists
Maroon doesn't feel like the songs all belong together... but all the songs are really nice on their own. And the word choices are wow.
I love this song, because it starts off using "off the hook" to mean letting someone get away with something. This picture of a girl being cheated on and letting the guy back in. Then in the middle of the song, she's getting wise, getting pissed, pondering making him eat his words "off the hook" ...and then comes the big finish, when she's finally gotten the courage to really do something about things. Decides this guy is worth fuckall and she isn't going to be used anymore, and "off the hook" is used to mean she WON'T be letting him back in again. Very clever. One of those songs from Maroon that I kinda forget about until it comes on shuffle or something, but it's one I put on repeat once I rediscover it.
This song's always gotten me through periods of time where I've felt like a real idiot for letting myself be used, it's a nice anthem for getting past blocks in life.
