A Man Lyrics

I am a man as a man I've been told
Bacon is brought to the house in this mold
Born of your bellies I yearn for the cord
Years I have groveled repentance ignored

And I have been blamed
And I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended

I am man who has grown from a son
Been crucified by enraged women
I am son who was raised by such men
I'm often reminded of the fools I'm among

And I have been shamed
And I have relented
I'm working my way toward our union mended
And I have been shamed
And I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended

we don't fare well with endless reprimands
we don't do well with a life served as a sentence
this won't work well if you're hell bent on your offence
I am a man who understands your resistance

I am a man who still does what he can
to dispel our archaic reputation
I am a man who has heard all he can
cuz I don't fare well with endless punishment

Cuz I have been blamed and I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended
And we have been blamed and we have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended

This would have to be how guys are judged quick but far more how they feel about themselves in this world and the evilness/bad name other guys have given them to be judged by a womans first impression, yet the guy can be good but he holds that ''bad name'' from the bad guys who created a society of common bad boys.then he feels he has to try to convince everyone hes different. though being raised by the common stereotypes makes it difficult.

''I am son who was raised by such men I'm often reminded of the fools I'm among "

its like the blind leading the blind .theres more to the song but im too tired to analyze it , maybe later .

I think it feels really powerful that this song is written & sung by a woman who in the past has not necessarily been that man-friendly but now is showing that she kinda feels a bit sorry for our poor damaged egos in a post feminist society (but at least does understand how we feel).

I've always been a feminist since I was like 5, and I'm male. So it's really excellent of her to make a song defending men who get put down so often and without a thought as to their feelings, or cultural repercussions of this mindset. Feminist is such a common word but masculist isn't even a word. Way to go if you beat up a guy but don't you ever hit a girl!

I think this song is about how Alanis feels about men and women. She thinks everyone goes on about how Women are also looked down on by men etc. But shes saying how Men are looked down on as well! I think :p

7/10 - Good song!

I agree that this song is making a point about the way all men have become generalised and degraded. It's because of the way women have had to struggle to fight against men's oppression and dominance in the past, the tables have turned now, but almost too far, and it's almost as if men have to defend themselves, and prove that they aren't like the average perceived sterotypical male that uses and abuses. It's from a man's point of view - and I think it makes a good point that even if there are men still like that today - i.e. "I'm often reminded of the fools I'm among" - it doesn't mean all are, that they realise there's stil lsome jackasses out there, but they want to be judged individually, not just as a part of the whole of whatever masculinity supposedly is.

I agree with DLH36 - this is a remarkable departure from the angry feminist area.
