Rock Is Dead Lyrics
All simple monkeys with alien babies
Amphetamines for boys, crucifixes for ladies
Sampled and soulless, worldwide and real webbed
You sell all the living for more safer dead
Anything to belong (x2)
CHORUS
Rock is deader than dead
Shock is all in your head
Your sex and your dope is all that we're fed
So fuck all your protests and put them to bed
God is in the TV
Rock la la la la la la la la
Rock la la la la la la la la la (x2)
1,000 mothers are praying for it
We're so full of hope and so full of shit
Build a new god to medicate and to ape
Sell us ersatz dressed up and real fake
Anything to belong (x2)
CHORUS
God is in the TV
Rock la la la la la la la
Rock la la la la la la la la (x2)
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la (x2)
CHORUS (x2)
Amphetamines for boys, crucifixes for ladies
Sampled and soulless, worldwide and real webbed
You sell all the living for more safer dead
Rock is deader than dead
Shock is all in your head
Your sex and your dope is all that we're fed
So fuck all your protests and put them to bed
Rock la la la la la la la la la (x2)
We're so full of hope and so full of shit
Build a new god to medicate and to ape
Sell us ersatz dressed up and real fake
Rock la la la la la la la la (x2)
La la la la la la la la (x2)

This song is a big "fuck you" to Billy Corgan who said that Rock is Dead. As much as I love MM, I kinda in a twited way, agree with Billy. That everyone is listening to the Britney Spears' and N'Syncs' of the world, and that is what killed rock. I personally liked the 90s, which was a Rock golden age. Also, MM takes a Nietzschian standpoint in the message in this song saying that we are doing what everyone else is doing, listening to what the sheep is listening to, that we are no longer individuals, but a herd following a shepard, a false god if you will.
@the Edge Ironic you say that about Billy Corgan since MM is now opening for Smashing Pumpkins on tour. 2015

And now for something completely different....
I see this song as a statement on how synthetic and controlled life has become, and that we no longer take actual risks or feel actual love anymore.
Just my thoughts, though.
Bo dosent give a shit but agrees his fucking great
Why is it that half you assholes fall for flamebait so easily? I mean one asshole says something, then he says he was kidding, and then you assholes still try to make a point by saying "Nuh-uh, ur ghey lolololo". Damn. Manson is smart as hell, yet some of you assholes.... Why do you bother existing?
Yeah, the Brave New World comparison works pretty well. I havent read 1984 yet. Amphetamines for boys part... Although I guess since the 90's was such better time, they didn't have ritalin back then, and ADHD wasnt fabricated yet... Anyway, ritalin is basically speed. A lot of people with ADD or ADHD I known tended to be creative individuals, yet they were fed this shit, and then they were just kinda die in a way, if you get it.... Brainwashed and stupid future CEO of Assholes Inc., you know? Meh...
I agree to the this-song-kicks-Corgan-in-the-balls premise, and Reznors Manson-bashing Starfuckers works too. Ironically enough, this was like the second-most mainstream song of MA. I think its kinda funny that although Starfuckers was meant to be a slap in Manson's face, Manson is actually in the video for it
Has anyone here ever compared Marylin Manson's songs to books like 1984, or Farenheit 451? The reason people find it so offensive is b/c it's so fucking true. It's what's going on in the world today...
It's about how rock is figuratively dead, similarly to how god is dead -- there's no use for it anymore. That's why the song makes multiple references to religion, comparing it to rock. There are obviously lots of ways to interpret "God os in the tv", but I think it's saying that even God is industrialized, like everything else, including rock music. The chorus is pretty simple. "Rock is deader than dead" -- rock is just another entertainment industry. "Shock is all in your head" -- vulgarity and controversial lyrics are so common in music now that it isn't shocking anymore. Now, in order to get gasps, bands turn to stupid gimmicks like wearing halloween masks. Which is also becoming mainstream and not shoking. I think this line essentially points to how pointless shock is in general. "Your sex and your dope is all that we're fed" -- again, I think this is meant to highlight how meaningless modern rock music has become. A lot of it is just about sex and drugs, which aren't even shocking anymore, since everyone does them. "So fuck all your protests and put them to bed" -- rock has already pretty much achieved its goals (civil rights, gender rolls, etc), so there's basically no use for it anymore and it's run its course. But, like god, it will linger on. Hell, they've even merged. Rock concerts for jesus is a clear sign that rock is dead.
@supercnt an underrated comment. Still, I have a bit different view on this song's lyrics meaning, but you made some really important highlights.

Only joking, his quality
This song is a big "fuck you" to Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins. Marilyn Manson was irked when billy corgan declared that rock is dead. Same also goes for Nine Inch Nails' Starfuckers, Inc. It's about Billy Corgan. It's about fame getting in your head
I don't think I'm completely right on this one, but it could be partly about how people listen to music for the wrong reasons. They all like to listen to what's popular because they think it's cool, which just about killed the whole music generation.
