Sweet and Tender Hooligan Lyrics
He was a sweet and tender hooligan, hooligan
And he said that he'd never, never do it again
And of course he won't (oh, not until the next time)
He was a sweet and tender hooligan, hooligan
And he swore that he'll never, never do it again
And of course he won't (oh, not until the next time)
Poor old man
He had an "accident" with a three-bar fire
But that's o.k.
Because he wasn't very happy anyway
Poor woman
Strangled in her very own bed as she read
But that's o.k.
Because she was old and she would have died anyway
Don't blame
The sweet and tender hooligan, hooligan
Because he'll never, never, never, never, never, never do it again
(not until the next time)
Jury, you've heard every word
So before you decide
Would you look into those "mother me" eyes
I love you for you, my love, you my love
You my love, you my love
Jury, you've heard every word
But before you decide
Would you look into those "mother me" eyes
I love you for you my love, you my love
I love you just for you, my love
Don't blame
The sweet and tender hooligan, hooligan
Because he'll never, never do it again
And...
"In the midst of life we are in death etc."
Don't forget the hooligan, hooligan
Because he'll never, never do it again
And...
"In the midst of life we are in death etc."
Etc! etc! etc! etc!
In the midst of life we are in death etc!
Etc! etc! etc! etc!
In the midst of life we are in debt etc!
Just will you free me?
Will you find me?
Will you free me?
Will you find me?
Will you free me, free me, free me, free me, free me, free me, free me?
Jury will you free me?
Will you find me?
Will you free me?
Will you find me?
How will you find me, find me, find me, find me, find me, find me, find me?
Oh etc! etc! etc! etc! etc! etc!
Etc! etc! etc! etc!
In the midst of life we are in debt etc!

"In the midst of life we are in debt" -Peter Cook & Dudley Moore
"In the midst of life we are in death" -Coleridge (adapted by Cook and Moore for their sketch) Also from The Burial Service in the Book of Common Prayer
This must be one of Morrissey's best ever vocals and the music never fails to speed up my heartbeat, especially the last minute or so. This song was brave in that it was more fashionable at the time (as now) to take the criminal's side rather than the victim...the sweet and tender hooligan would be more likely to be buying Smiths records than his aged prey. Definately in my Smiths top 5.
The end of the song he sings Jury will you FINE / FREE - not find me. He's hoping to be freed but second best is to be fined.
Great psychobilly style and great vocals

Great rockabilly song. Its a shame the above postd lyrics are wrong. The last verse should state "judge" instead of "just" and also "fine" instead of "find". This makes more sense. The accused [hooligan] is awaiting judgement - a fine or free[dom].
...and also the earlier verses are incorrect. In some lines after "Mother me eyes" he states "lord" and not "love".
In the UK the judge is called "my lord" in court.
The lesson endeth.
Re: RedDwarf's comment: I noticed that, I wonder if Morrissey deliberately sings it wrong to either annoy people or laugh at people who think it is pronounced like that, a lot of people spell it "ect". I wondered the same thing about his pronunciation of "plagiarise" in Cemetry Gates, I have heard that the song title was deliberately spelled wrong...

Great guitar.
@Eatcarpet not only 'great' but BRILLIANT

i always thought he was being sarcastic, calling the hooligan sweet and tender is obviously quite a contradiction, and saying he'll never do it again, well not until the next time isn't really sympathising at all, it's saying he's guilty and he'll be guilty again.
Yes that's definitely what I got from it too. It reminds me of Stop Me... because of the theme of someone apologising and promising not to do what they did again, but it's kind of clear that they will. Am I making any sense whatsoever??

This song is awesome. I don't know why no one commented on it yet. It's great to just turn this song up and dance around the house. It makes you forget all your troubles. Well...there's my two cents.
