Faith Alone Lyrics

heard a sermon from a creaky pulpit
with no one in the nave
I paid a visit to the synagogue
and I left there feeling blame

no one could tell me what to do
no one had the ability to answer me

what the world needs now
is some answers to our problems
we can't buy more time
because our tender isn't valid
if your soul needs love
you can get consoled by pity
but it looks as though faith alone
won't sustain us anymore

watched the scientists throw up their hands conceding
progress will resolve it all
saw the manufactures of earth's debris
ignore another green peace call

no one could tell me what to do
they had not the capacity to answer me

what the world needs now
is some accountability
we can't buy more time
because time won't accept our money
if your soul needs love
you can always have my pity
but it looks as though faith alone
won't sustain us no more

this song needs to be played very loud so everyone in the world can hear it. america needs to get out from under the infinitely heavy blanket of religion before the country suffocates.

@ltjpezgirl The whole world, really, not just America

so you believe that humans are naturally evil?

The entire point of the song IS that nobody's thinking about the answers to our imminent problems. (And don't bother denying they aren't there. Two weeks ago, the World Wildlife Foundation announced that the planet's ability to sustain life will have been totally obliterated by 2050.) Most of us just sit and believe that some "omnipotent" outside force will let us do nothing - progress, the Rapture, Fukuyama's "end of history" line, determinism and historicism in all their forms. That's what Bad Religion is about and against.

Even though I disagree with the reason given by ltjpezgirl, I generally agree this song needs to be blasted on radio stations across America.

hennessee101, the ignorance and prejudice of your statements confounds me. You clearly state by your arguements that only religious people are capable of having and holding values. This is ridiculous. Millions of people in this world are not religious and at the same time are kind and loving human beings, a true addition to society. It is possible to be a good person simply because one believes it is the right thing to do and they have compassion for another man. And this country's "justice and freedom" was hipocrasy in the early years. It was only justice and freedom for rich white land owners who were always white and in the earlier years also had to be puritan. (your welcome to look this up) It has taken hundreds of years of progress through movements legistlation and changes in attitudes. As you state we are becomming less religious, but we have clearly made progress, far far from done, but progres none the less. Interesting. Also, please try to actually back up your statements with some kind of logical arguement. To say there is no good without god is blindness of reason at its best...I am not religious at all but i give to my community, I love my fiance and give her everything i can give. I will do my best to be a good father. I help my friends, my neighbors and care about otheres. Never once have i read the bible, been to church or studied christian values. Neither had the Native Americans who were brutally slaughtered by those who held the values of "Justice" of which you speak. Who was more christian? I know how to be good. Why? Because i know about kindness, and it was taught to me by the actions of my parents, my friends, and my expierence in life. Not from a church. Furthermore, how would an atheiest belief lead at all to the arrogance or superiority our government exudes in its manner, the hunger of the world and the majority of this countrys blindness to it(which is the actual basis of this song, the blindness to worlds problems and the refusal to act). Our refusal to help the world. God does not qualify the person, the actions of the man qualify the person as good or evil. Please do not insult your race by saying we have no idea what is good or evil without religion. Please think. I would aslo like congradulate Edo on his ability to actually give reason for his statements. Henessee you clearly need to learn to think of reasons instead of spouting rhetoric. Thank you if you read this far. --Zach

wow, very well said. I am not religious at all, and I consider myself a good person, I care about people and try to help whenever I can, simply because I know it is the right thing to do, and I agree with StupidPunkRocker that Henessee's statement was a true sign of ignorance.

StupidPunkRocker, I agree with you 110%, but there is something I do need to put forth that I think is important. We all know we live in a capitilistic society with a capitilistic system, right. The system we live is based on puritan ideals and the puritan work-ethic is embedded in our system. We all more or less live a christian lifestyle purely because of the system we live. Not because we are christians ourselves, I am not a christian just to let you know. I just thought that was an important bit of information to put forward.

I think this could also be interpretitated as a song saying there is no real, actual answer to some problems, and of course, that we need to stop asking other people for the answers, and just find them ourselves.

the point of this song, sounds very much like Friedrich Nietzsche in "thus spoke zarathrustra", and the holy idea that the idea of a god is no longer enough to sustain modern man and that "I teach you the overmnan. Man is something that shal be overcome." in turn saying that the answers and meaning we seek is not in others or religion, but is found only in ourselves.

i enjoy reading Nietzsche, too! he makes some great points.

oh and...before me and my friend heard Against The Grain, he was writing a song for our band called Faith Alone, wih the EXACT SAME ending line in the verses. then we heard the song by Bad Religion and we were shocked and laughed...

"And if you get rid of God, then you have no logical basis for good and bad (values)"

And "Spread forth and multiply" doesn't sound like a reckless, suicidal concept to you?
