Sex And Candy Lyrics
Hanging 'round
Downtown by myself
And I had so much time
To sit and think about myself
And then there she was
Like double cherry pie
Yeah, there she was
Like disco superfly
I smell sex and candy here
Who's that lounging in my chair?
Who's that casting devious stares in my direction?
Mama, this surely is a dream
Hanging 'round
Downtown by myself
And I had too much caffeine
And I was thinking 'bout myself
And then there she was
In platform double suede
Yeah, there she was
Like disco lemonade
I smell sex and candy here
Who's that lounging in my chair?
Who's that casting devious stares in my direction?
Mama, this surely is a dream
Mama, this surely is a dream
Yeah, mama, this must be my dream
Downtown by myself
And I had so much time
To sit and think about myself
And then there she was
Like double cherry pie
Yeah, there she was
Like disco superfly
Who's that lounging in my chair?
Who's that casting devious stares in my direction?
Mama, this surely is a dream
Downtown by myself
And I had too much caffeine
And I was thinking 'bout myself
And then there she was
In platform double suede
Yeah, there she was
Like disco lemonade
Who's that lounging in my chair?
Who's that casting devious stares in my direction?
Mama, this surely is a dream
Mama, this surely is a dream
Yeah, mama, this must be my dream

Here's the singer's exact quote, ""Well, I was dating a girl and she was going to Bryn Mawr College and it's where my dad teaches. And I was probably 17 or something like that and she was like 18. I always liked the older girls. (laughs) But we were in her dorm room, and her roommate came in and she saw us there, and she was like, 'Oh, it smells like sex and candy in here.' And I always remembered that. And that was back in the late '80s"... "I was like, hey, let's just throw in that phrase that's been sticking in my head for the last 5 years or whatever."
Okay. I don't see any reason to doubt his explanation for the origin of the phrase. That said, songwriters have a long tradition of throwing people off the sent (pun intended) of their song meanings. And I find it far too coincidental that he just happened to throw the phrase sex and candy into a song where he just happened to mention double cherry pie. If this wasn't a conscious lolita reference, it seems very likely it was unconscious. And I'm not saying that makes him any kind of creep or anything. It's simply a literary device in...

Oh just get a life. If you can see all of that sick stuff in the song, then there is obviously something wrong with you. You know nothing...the lead singer attended a school called Marcy Open School, and he never got to play on the playground as a kid because he always got teased. He named his band Marcy Playground after the school. The singer has admitted that the lyrics in this song are all euphemisms for sex. But it is NOT about child molestation.

@violetzebras It's been a long time since you wrote that. Sorry- all the folks who say you're wrong/you say are wrong... are right.

@violetzebras Sorry, maybe that wasn't clear. I'm not sick, your naive.

Or, it's about him lusting after some tart. But I guess you can believe whatever you want, and we're all sickos.

i believe its much more simplistic an overview of a man that is lost in thought coming home to find his girlfriend has a companion that was there for more than just a visit and he can still smell the activities they did. He becomes shocked and is in disbelief so he wanders the streets only to see her everywhere he goes but only glimpses, brief visions of her just as disco lemonade was here then gone just as quickly. Its the classic betrayal, its about a woman that cheats
very true. true to me.. i take so much from the song when i believe it stems from a cheating perspective. good call and music is ALL about how you take it :)

@edgeofnowa best one i've heard so far. That's exactly how I felt about the song.

This is my favorite song ever. I have other songs that'll be my 'Flavor of the Month,' but this is always the #1 for me. And I know it's just a bit of nonsense, but the very first time i heard it, I thought it was awesome. It had to be explaned ad nauseum when it came out...basically John Wozniak the lead singer had just finished having sex with his girlfriend, and they were having a post cotial cigarette when the girlfriend's roommate walked in and said 'Ooh, smells like sex and candy in here.' And so he made a song based on those words. A weird song with a weird story.
"Hanging 'round Downtown by myself And I had so much time To sit and think about myself And then there she was Like double cherry pie Yeah, there she was Like disco superfly"
I think that this guy was walking around.. after all he's got the whole day to do nothing but brood.. and he sees this beautful vixen, as tempting as "double cherry pie"
so they have sex (and the whole things so sweet) but the chick takes over his mind, "casting devious stares" in his direction..
He's goes back out to think and such, and all he can think about, besides himself is her.. how he want's her "disco lemonade."
That's just my interpretation! neonic
this song is so groovy
yeah, far out..
yeah, far out..
this song is purdy. Yeah don't use the term gay as an insult. Why not use the term hetro as an insult instead. fools.
Spidey you put more thought into reading metallica buff's comment than he did into writing it, ridiculous comment man...

Wow, after reading all the reviews about child molestation, this song will never be the same to me.
And it has NOTHING TO DO WITH CHILDREN. It was based on a real comment that someone made about a room smelling like sex and candy.
@akirstin yeah, right.
@akirstin yeah, right.
I had to add my two cents. I think that perhaps it's about a woman seducing the speaker. I haven't seen the video, but this song just seems to sexy to be about much of anything else.
So think about it. He's by himself, he looks up there's this very attractive woman trying to seduce him, he gives in, he's exstatic, but doesn't know her, (who's that lounging in my chair, casting devious stares) and frankly can't believe that she's going to have sex with him. (Mama, surely this is a dream, must be my dream)
Pretty simple, eh? No need to overanylize this one.
