Doll Parts Lyrics

I am
Doll eyes
Doll mouth
Doll legs
I am
Doll arms
Big veins
Dog beg

Yeah, they really want you
They really want you
They really do
Yeah, they really want you
They really want you
But I do too

I want to be the girl with the most cake
I love him so much it just turns to hate
I fake it so real, I am beyond fake
And someday, you will ache like I ache
Someday, you will ache like I ache

I am
Doll parts
Bad skin
Doll heart
It stands for knife
For the rest of my life

Yeah, they really want you
They really want you
They really do
Yeah, they really want you
They really want you
But I do, too

I want to be the girl with the most cake
He only loves those things
Because he loves to see them break
I fake it so real, I am beyond fake
And someday, you will ache like I ache
And someday, you will ache like I ache
Someday you will ache you like I ache

And someday, you will ache like I ache
And someday, you will ache like I ache
And someday, you will ache like I ache
And someday, you will ache like I ache
Someday, you will ache like I ache

This song is about a situation where one person idolises another and doesn't know how to love themselves enough to know when it's time to let go... Instead they are left in what seems like an orderly queue for this person's affection

i think that's a great interpretation

also when she screams at the end it's like she's releasing her rage at him, and promising that one day this pain will be his.

Miss Mess I couldn't sgree with you more. Same goes for you Dreamie. The fact that this song was written and recorded before Kurt's death makes it so haunting. Those screams you mentioned would become much more agonised afterwards. Courtney was right, this pain did turn out to be his.

I love this song and I think it has many possible meanings. However, I've always tried to look at it in the literal sense.

My interpretation is that the song begins with her being a beautiful, perfect and immaculate woman, hence, her body is made of 'doll parts'. She starts by listing all the parts of herself which are generally considered the most attractive, eyes, lips/mouth, legs.

She then says: Doll arms Big veins Dog bait (I'm fairly sure I hear 'dog bait') I think this references her suicidal feelings. Her veins being 'big' and noticeable to her, tempting her.

Then she goes on to reveal her frustration about a boy who she's desperately in love with Yeah, they really want you They really want you But I do too I think a major theme in this song is female rivalry, in a strange way. She is perfect, with 'doll parts' and yet she is fearful and frustrated by all the other women who she is competing with for this man's attention. I guess it could be about Kurt, being a famous beloved rock star.

She reinforces this desperation for his attention by saying she wants to be 'the girl with the most cake'. Again I think this references the general feeling of inadequacy that some women may have and the frustrating and endless competition with one another.

I love him so much it just turns to hate I think this just refers to how her deep, strong love and adoration is toxic; making her hate herself and him as well.

I fake it so real, I am beyond fake Again, Courtney is killing herself for this person, trying to be/look exactly the way she thinks he wants her to and she feels as though it's never enough.

I've never been quite sure of the repeated phrase, 'Someday, you will ache like I ache'. It almost seems menacing. Like her toxic and unwavering love and devotion has turned her evil and conjured up violent feelings towards the one who is doing this to her.

Later, she mentions her 'doll heart'. A very sad line indicating that her love and feelings are worthless and powerless like that of an inanimate object.

It stands for knife For the rest of my life I think these lines generally just reference her hopelessness and again bring up her willingness and desire to slit her wrists and end the pain. This line comes after the songs climax, sung in a soothing soft way. I think this is her realisation that she will never have enough power (specifically in this case) to get his attention or be the only one.

In my opinion, the last line of the song, sung in a slow, soft, faint way could possibly refer to her committing suicide towards the end of the song, through the shouting and the pain in her voice until she feels too faint nearing the end and her speech is slowed down.

My Interpretation

@coykoi The 'female rivalry' could also indicate a rival who, though less doll-like or desirable, may be the one the guy eventually chooses, leading her to hate her own looks and maybe self-mutilate("it stands for knife" etc).

This song stems from Courtney Love's fascination with old dolls, in the imagery. But it has nothing to do with dolls. It is a personal song, in it's lyrics. Everyone can believe it's Courtney Love speaking when she says ''Someday you will ache like I ache''. It is very believable. This song is great poetry. The theme of this song is love, and being used. They might pretend to love you, but they really don't. They leave you with heartache, whether it's a lover or the world in general.Everyone breaks you.He ( or they) only love things to see them break. It is also about wanting everything, and ending up with nothing. At the end all you can say is ''Someday you will ache like I ache'' or hope they will ache like you ache someday. This song is autobiography for Courtney Love, but it could also be autobiography for a lot of people. When I was depressed once, I put the line ''Someday you will ache like I ache'' as my screensaver on my computer.Courtney Love defines heartache for both her self and the world in general in this song. This song is genuis.

Very true...what goes up...must come down. Be careful how you treat others...as you may see Karma come around to you in the end and know what it is to lose love, be used and in pain.

The first time I heard this song, I cried. The lyrics are just so sad. I think Courtney wrote this about Kurt...

@NeverXMind Not about kurt but it is inspired by him.

"Doll Parts" seems to me like a metaphor for someone who, despite how they may be desired and admired by others,is only going to be used, broken and discarded once the initial infatuation wears off.Just a pretty shell that everyone desires bur no one really loves or cares for;they just play with it for a while then toss it away. It's an accurate description of how so may people are at first praised and then used and cast aside, often for new "doll parts" which will be treated the same way.

"Yeah, they really want you, they really want you, they really do..." ...and then suddenly they don't want you, despite how they desired you at first.

"I love him so much,it just turns to hate"...sometimes the only way to deal with love that is no longer being returned is to start hating the one we actually love too much.

"I fake it so real I am beyond fake"...she does such a convincing job of pretending she isn't hurt/broken that it's hard to tell just how she really feels.

"Someday, you'll ache like I ache"...the last resort is just to desperately hope that one day the person who hurt you will hurt.

My Interpretation

@ShatteredVinyl I totally agree I missed out the yeah they really want you but I do too part.

To the conspiracy theorists, knife could just be a metaphor for pain, her having been treacherously stabbed emotionally, and even plastic surgery.

This is one of my favourite songs. It has so much meaning,I always feel emotional after listening to it which is really something because not a lot of songs can do that. I think the song is to a certain extent about her relationship with Kurt and how sometimes she felt like she had to almost compete for his affections -"Yeah, they really want you, they really want you, but I do too" She wanted the rock star lifestyle with the famous husband, but she also truely loved him and didnt want the fame to get in the way of their love "I want to be the girl with the most cake, I love him so much it just turns to hate" I also think that it was difficult for her with Kurts cocain problem and all and that line is also refering to the fact she loved him sooo much, but at the same time she hated him for doing it to himself, destroying his life, and part of hers. I dunno, that cud all be bullshit what Ive just said, but thats what it means to me

it's about kurt you can tell because the child in the video looks like kurt did as a child.

she said it's about thinking that someone(kurt) doesn't want/love you and how she wants to be the girl with the most "cake"

This song makes me almost want to like Courtney Love. You can feel her greif, even though the record was released AFTER kurt's death. Which leads me to believe that she knew it was going to happen... she could see him dying even before it happened. I people are going to use that to say the she killed him, but everyone knows that's bullshit. It's about him, obviously.

Courtney wrote this song right after she met him. It was just released after. She wrote it because she thought he didn't like her. The original title is "Dissed."

this song is about Kurt Cobain. To me, its about how she misses Kurt. The line "love you so much it just turns to hate" means that she was only bad to kurt because she loved him so much [who wouldn't?]. I think the line "someday you will ache like I ache" is to the public, saying that we will feel her pain for the loss of Kurt later if we don't now, because he was that important. And torrance, leave Courtney alone. She may appear like a bitch to you, but I believe that Kurt genuinely loved her, and that's good enough for me. Stop insulting my hero's, mentor's and God's wife!!!

@comebackkurt this was written before kurt died

Its about a guy that's everything to her and everyone wants him but he only wants her then leaves he because he loves to see her break but she still loves him.

Like Courtney there are a lot of messed up layers in this song. So the first one is that when Courtney was telling Kurt that she loved him she sent him a doll head in a heart shape box. perhaps a reference to that there was also a Nirvana song that referenced this "heart shaped box" Song probably references her troubled teenager life where she was a exotic dancer in many locations including Japan. Some people said that she was a child prositute as well but not proven. When I say she or her I mean the persona of the poem...
