Yeah, "New York minute" refers to the fact that supposively, everything moves faster in New York. But I don't know about that, if you've ever spent an actual minute or two stuck in traffic in a really smelly cab. Awesome song, awesome band... the song is obviously about how quickly your whole life can change, and how easy it is to lose those you love. It speaks particularly about suicide.
On the Hell Freezes Over DVD, Don Henley introduces this track by saying "this is about appreciating what you've got". I think the saddest and most poignant line is "baby I've changed, please come back". You can really feel the loneliness in this haunting song.
This song is about how in the insane new york life the dangers are everywhere and at the start of the song one of the dangers caused some guy to kill himself
new york minute dosnt nessarly refer to the actual city...its a phrase... it just goes to show anything can happen in these crazy times we live in....

I don't know what this song meant in the 70's, when it was written, but ever since 9/11, the lyrics really hit home!
"In a New York minute, everything can change" "In these days, when darkness falls early, people rush home, to the ones they love" "One day they're here, next day, they're gone" "I know there's somebody somewhere can make these dark clouds disappear, but until that day, I have to believe, I believe" -I never really thought about until one day, my local rock station was playing this song with quotes from the president (saying stuff like, "We will prevail" and that kind of thing) and Rudy Giuliani. It was pretty wild, and I hadn't thought about the lyrics in that sense. Now, everytime I hear it, 9/11 is all I can think about.

Actually I do think this song is about New York - "He won't be down on Wall Street in the morning" in the first verse. The song talks about "the station" and wearing a coat in the winter on days when it gets dark early and walking through the park - those could be about any city but those things are very New York too, along with the jazzy saxophone touches of this song. But yes, I think the song is about appreciating what you got, because anything could change for better or worse. The guy who killed himself in the first did not appreciate what he had and killed himself. In the last verse, the narrator/writer says that he may be down and things are the best, but he does believe in life.

This seems to sum up this song. Though I think the chorus is repeated a bit too much.
