I think that in this song there are two types of cheating -- the obvious cheating on the older man with the younger, but there are also these lines: She whispers that it's only for awhile She swears that soon she'll be comin' back forever She pulls away and leaves him with a smile Which to me sound like she is making false promises to the younger man, because she doesn't want to leave the life of luxury she has with the older. So she is "cheating" him in a sense as well. She realizes that she is stuck in a place where she can either have love or money, but not both. I think that the last half of the song sounds like she had plans for her life, to go out and marry rich and become wealthy, but it didn't change anything, so now she has given up a life of happiness for nothing really, because the money doesn't satisfy and neither does the old man (cold as ice). And I don't think that her husband is saying it, I think she is reflecting on herself and coming to the realization that she didn't get what she wanted... (feels like a fool).

when i saw the eagles live glen frey commented "i dedicate this song to my first wife, plantiff" he also added "this song is about that secret love triangle that you cant never win" basically its about a woman that goes off and cheats on her husband and tries to hide it but it is very obvious. EAGLES ROCK!!

I was breaking up with my first wife when this song was on the charts, and it was devastating to me. At the time, I was working in the Rickenbacher (the guitars) wood shop and I remember working at a drill press, hearing this on the radio, and tears just streaming down my face. It was many years before I could listen to it without tearing up. I just read Acey Dearest's above post (#6), and something struck me... the last lines before the chorus >>>can be in either voice

"You can't hide your lyin' eyes." That is totally illogical. Her smile is lyin' but her eyes are honest.

I think that this song is about more than just a woman who is cheating on her husband. Yes, she is lying to her husband, and it's obvious; but she is also lying to herself. She tries to tell herself that she is happy, first that the rich old man makes her happy, and then that having an affair makes her happy. But she's "still the same old girl you used to be" and she can't deny to herself that she is disappointed with what her life has become.

The last stanza before the chorus... don't know why but I always thought it was like the husband talking when he found out. Good song.

Being involved in a love triangle is the worst. Thank God it all ended with me and her together. Anyways this is IMO one of Glenn Frey's best. along with Tequila Sunrise.
