I think this song is about being stuck in a really hopeless place. Just living every single day in the same way and not finding any joy in your life.

this song is about life being without meaning or reason. it's about just living and being depressed.

Been there, done that, got the tee-shirt. It looks to me like divorce. I agree with the above interpretations about a relationship gone wrong, then the part about "I read every word, and I still don't understand" could be divorce papers, or a dear john letter -- you wanted it to last, so you don't understand how it could come to this. And you have to "sign the line". Maybe he's in line to file the papers, I don't know. And ying and yan represents opposite qualities or male and female. And yes, he tries to turn to spirituality for help, but it doesn't change the situation or make it go away. In the relationship, you are always arguing, "Whether you win or lose Isn't gonna change a single thing". It stills hurts and it's still over. You feel hopeless.

On the other hand, it could easily be some other situation, like dealing with a negative story about you in the newspaper, or a letter denying you your goals, your dreams, hence the title, "pipe dreams". Wiki- "A pipe dream is a fantastic hope or plan that is generally regarded as being nearly impossible to achieve."

This is my FAVORITE song. I love the beautiful melody and lyrics. i interpreted it as kind of just being yourself and not getting caught up in image or the hectic world, or something, cuz in the end its not whether you win or lose, but how you lived each day. that kinda thing.

I'm not really sure whats it's about, maybe something to do with being in an imposible stuation that causes a lot of pain? Anyway, I love it. It has such a beautiful melody and the way it's sung makes me want to cry.

I guess this song is just about feeling that in the end, nothing really matters, money, looks, whatever. and the part about heaven being so far away seems like he thinks we've done this all to ourselves and maybe we wont get to see heaven... I guess... not really sure... Any ideas? Still, It's one of my favourite songs.

i always thought this song was about falling in love with someone that you really felt you had something in common with.. and for some reason she writes a letter to him and breaks up with him ["i read it all, every word, and i still don't understand a thing"]. he thinks about losing love and how life is very much the same. it goes around in an endless circle of pain. thats just what i think..

I can totally relate to this song, especially the 1st line at present: ' I read it all, every word, and I still don't understand a thing' --> that's how I feel every day when I'm revsing for my A-Levels! :) But seriously, the song is fantastic. 'I'd pray to god if there was heaven, but heaven seems so very far from here' - how I can relate to that line.
