Gone To The Movies Lyrics
Drops onto the forehead of the waiting boy
He surveys his rental kingdom and he
Wonders if he's really lost his one joy
Only place she ever went to lose herself
She's gone to the movies now and she don't need your help
City sky reflects the silver street below
And it covers up the cars and the Wallflowers cd
ended half an hour ago
And drive to find the show
She's gone to the movies now and she's not coming home
She's gone to the movies now and she's not coming home
There's nowhere she could sit besides the bed
And he wonders if the car will start tomorrow
Or he'll have to take the bus instead
Trying to spot her rusted Pontiac
She's gone to the movies now and she's not back
She's gone to the movies now and she's not back
This song, to me, is very personal. As stellaluna1125 says so above, the movies is a place where one can be free and get lost in the plot. As this song progresses, the fact that shines is that the girl would rather be at the movies than be with him. Maybe it was cause of all the fights, or that the girl wanted something the boy could never be able to give her.
"Another fool would go down to the Only place she ever went to lose herself" ... [go down to the theatre to look for her] "Another fool would dig the broken car out from the snow And drive to find the show" ... [shows desperation to find the girl at the theatre] "Any other fool would be out on the roadway Trying to spot her rusted Pontiac" [standing outside, waiting for her to come back]
The 'fool' would be the romantic. Usually, girls fall for such things, but I guess this one doesn't. Or maybe, the fool is non-existant and that the boy never tried to do those things because he thought they'd do nothing when really they would've made a difference.
"Now he looks around his place and anyways There's nowhere she could sit besides the bed And he wonders if the car will start tomorrow Or he'll have to take the bus instead"
This is an interesting verse. The first two lines have a sense that the boy didn't have space for the girl in her life and that was what the girl needed. The second two lines confuse me a bit, but maybe it was just thrown in. ;) Anyway, this is a really good song.
And great job to Dan for mentioning the Wallflowers.
- FANTASTIC song.
- Simple approach to this song: This girl he likes no longer likes him, but he won't take the hint and leave her alone. He keeps following her, or calling her, when she's not interested. He's a "fool" for pursuing this girl that has no interest in him. The song suggests he should just forget her and move on. That is a shallow interpretation. About diggin the car out of the snow...shows he'll do anything to win her back, but she's not interested.
I think this song is about a girl who left a guy who seemed to like her but didn't really care. If he did care he'd be out trying to find her. it seems he clearly isn't that bothered she's gone cos even when he's left on his own lookin round his empty apartment all he's thinking about is if his car is going to start or he'll be taking the bus.
I have a slightly different take on this song (which is one of my fav's).

I think it is about a relationship on the brink... the guy is an Ass and he has somewhat of a history of failing to stand up for what he cares for.

So i think it's (the relationship and its problems) all come to a head and she has left.

True to form, he knows exactly where she is likely to be (the movies) but he spends his time talking himself out of doing anything about it.

I believe that if he was 'another fool'...
I believe that if he was 'another fool' (someone smarter than he is) and he went out looking for her (just like the end of some romance movie) she would take him back, she is hoping he will fight for her... for them. but his defeatist attitude is stopping that from ever happening.
I love this song. Don't you ever jsut want to get lost in the movies, you can go to a placae where anything is possible, you can live forever and always have the happy ending tha tyou wanted. I feel the same way about music, you should be able to get lost in the things you love. Then there is just this fool, who keeps on trying to give this girl something he never can.
I don't quite understand this song. It all seems pretty straightforward until it gets to the "another fool" parts. The most I can guess is that he's sitting around thinking about the life he used to have and a) his girl died on the way to some place and he's just pretending she's at the movies and that she'll be back later b) she left him and isn't coming back and he's in denial about it, pretending (again) that she's at the movies.
The lyrics say "he wonders if he's really lost his one joy" so apparently his significant other has left him in some capacity. The lines about "another fool" suggest that he's in denial about reality and seem to say that these events have already happened.
I don't really get why he's called a fool, though. Nor do I how you can drive a "broken car" to "find the show". So it seems like the word "broken" is of some significance. The most puzzling lines to me are "And he wonders if the car will start tomorrow/Or he'll have to take the bus instead"
These are just some things to ponder. Can anyone shed any light?
to me, it is about the end of a relationship speciafically its about someone who isnt fighting to keep the relationship from ending, instead he is sitting around feeling sorry for himself about why it went wrong "He surveys his rental kingdom and he Wonders if he's really lost his one joy" but he never made the effort with her in the first place and never fought to keep her "Another fool would go down to the Only place she ever went to lose herself" he knows where she is, but he isnt going after her

...
maybe it is told from the point of view of another guy who wishes he was with the girl himself but she was with this guy who doesnt apreciate her, and that is why he calls him a fool, because he had everything he wanted, but didnt make an effort to keep it i think this is clear he didnt make an effort with her in the line "Now he looks around his place and anyways There's nowhere she could sit besides the bed"
i think the broken car bit is that his car isnt really broken beyond repair, he is just making excuses not to go after her like, another more deserving guy would fix his car, go after her and win her back but he doesnt instead he worries about everyday trivial things "And he wonders if the car will start tomorrow Or he'll have to take the bus instead" (see his car isnt really broken, and there would be other ways to go after her, like the bus) he is letting the relationship end, whereas another fool, but probably more deserving man, would have fought to keep her
those are just my thoughts on it, hope that helped :]
I think the "another fool" part is referring to him in the past, maybe he went chasing after her many times before, and something's changed and he's no longer going to
I thought the that his wondering about the car starting was kinda self explanatory. If you look at things from his place, it seems like he gave up on love. Like he doesn't belive in miracles, (her coming back to him) anymore. So instead of his trying to win her back, he just says "screw it" and goes on about his life.
the girl likes to go lose herself in movies and is very spontanious and emotionally open. the boy is very calculated, literal minded and logical. this shows in his observations in the 3rd verse, starting "another fool..."
they're two very different characters.its why he could never give her everything she needs from a relationship and why they've parted.
it makes me tink of Jenny and Forest's relationship in Forest Gump.
i guess its easier to see if you can relate to it
one of my fav Semisonic tunes
^^^oops^^^, i mean... "the 3rd verse starting 'now he looks around.....'"
Gone to the movies is codeword for the fact that his girl has left him. From the sounds of it, it would seem that it's not a rare thing, though; maybe it's something he tells him when she's going to see someone else, andhe comes to realize what the phrase really means.
Another fool, in all instances, would be out finding the girl. Maybe figuring out who she is with.
However, he is NOT a fool, and he can call it for what it is and knows better than to go and find where she is. Maybe she's left for the last time, and he knows that it's over.
