Not Myself Lyrics

suppose I said
I am on my best behavior
there are times
I lose my worried mind

would you want me when I’m not myself
wait it out while I am someone else

suppose I said
colors change for no good reason
words will go
from poetry to prose

would you want me when I’m not myself
wait it out while I am someone else

and I
in time
will come around
I always do
for you

suppose I said
you’re my saving grace
would you want me when I’m not myself
wait it out while I am someone else
would you want me when I’m not myself
wait it out while I am someone else

I'm in a relationship with somebody who is bipolar. I never really understood this song until we started spending more time around eachother and he would tell me what it was like in his mind sometimes. One day he went, "I worry I'm going to do something to scare you away." "Suppose I said I am on my best behavior," really hit me hard because this person I really care for is trying his hardest to be on his 'best behavior' for me and himself and his family. But there are still times when I don't even recognize him - he's so down or whatever - but it always gets better. "Wait it out while I am someone else." Perhaps this is the anthem of anybody with a mental illness.

Geeze this reminds me of a situation that my friend had with a girl. Everyday he would ask me how he could start a conversation with this girl. I just told him to cut loose, just like he was tlaking to me. He claimed that he could never really show his real self, telling the girl what he was really interested in and all. He finally did cut loose and showed his real self and actually went on a date with the girl. :o)

no, no, no. I don't think it's about him not being himself (like these first few comments say).

I think it's saying how sometimes they cannot be themself, for whatever reason. And describing how in this state 'colours will change for no good reason'etc..

But 'in time will come around' just how they always do; go back to being them rather than 'someone else'.

So they're asking this person if this is all okay and if they'll be able to wait for them to be better again. But at the same time, saying that with them this will all be...

yeah, this song is definitely about a guy who hasn't been showing his real self to the girl he likes and is worried that when he does, she's not going to accept him for who he is. i think lots of people can relate to that.

hes worried about showing his deeper feelings to this girl "suppose I said colors change for no good reason words will go from poetry to prose " he feels like he cant say the stuff he really thinks because of her reaction. but who would react badly to john mayer?! :o

I think this song is about a guy who acts kinda stupid around his girl. He really loves her but she tries to change him, to make him a "better" person. But he just wants to know: "would you want me when m not myself wait it out while I am someone else" He's saying is that really how you want me, don't you want me for the person I really am and not for who you want me to be?... and she's waiting it out while he's someone else.. thinking sooner or later he will become this "great" guy that she wants.. but in actuality he just wants her to accept him for the person he is.. however pad that may seem to her.

Well i don't agree with most of the comments posted in here.. I think this is about a guy singing to his girlfriend.. Wondering, if she'd stay with him no matter what.. Everyone has those times when they're not themselves, they are irritated, they become somewhat agressives.. This is about the guy asking her if she's staying with him, not only in the good times, but also in the dark ones, "for better or for worse". Anyway i can be wrong, but that's what it means to me

man this is such a great song, so many times ive wanted to just let it all out to a girl and just hold it back, that totally relates to the song, "there are times i lose my worried mind........"

and i, in time, will come around. i always do, for you.* what a wonderful line. john mayer is amazing, almost as amazing as dave matthews and ben kweller.

i think that this song can apply to anyone in any situation. everyone goes through those periods when they are not acting quite like themselves. "and right in time, come around. i always do for you." those lyrics are true and any good relationship. if anyone truly cares for you, they will wait for you to come back around.

I think the girl might already know him, because he asks "would you want me when I'm not myself." So I always assumed that she knew him, he was simply asking if she loved him enough to go through the tough times with him, wait it out while hes "someone else" struggling with his inner battles. And once he has fought his fight and gained his footing again, he'll come around again for her, because even though he was acting different his love for her never changed, and she is his "saving grace," she motivated him and the thought of her got him through it. Anyway, that's what I got out of it the first time I listened.
