The Mountains Win Again Lyrics
I pick up my smile put it in my pocket
Hold it for a while try not to have to drop it
Men are not to cry so how am I to stop it
Keep it all inside don't show how much she rocked ya
Ooh can you feel the same
Ooh you gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Ooh I feel it comin' in
The mountains win again
The mountains win again
Dreams we dreamed at night were never meant to come to life
I can't understand the ease he pulled away her hand
This time in my life I was hurt enough to care
I guess from now on I'll be careful what I share
Ooh can you feel the same
Ooh ya gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Yeah feel it comin' in
The mountains win again
A pocket is no place for a smile anyway
Someday I will find love again will blow my mind
Maybe it will be that love that got away from me
Is there a line to write that could make you cry tonight
Can you feel the same
Yeah ya gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Ooh feel it comin' in
The mountains win again
Ooh the mountains win again
Hold it for a while try not to have to drop it
Men are not to cry so how am I to stop it
Keep it all inside don't show how much she rocked ya
Ooh you gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Ooh I feel it comin' in
The mountains win again

I would say just the force of nature.. that which you cannot control. Relationships seem to collapse and end in pain, regardless of what you do... it just seems to be a power greater than him toying with him. The end of the song displays hope though... despite the rough hand he has been dealt at times, he will get back up and try again.
So well said I couldnt agree more!Well written.:)

I love this song... I actually think the mountains have a slightly different meaning. I always saw it as an obsticle in the of love, they are somthing large and hard to overcome. And sometimes because they're so big you just give up. It could also have to do with the physical mountains... somthing that seems to seprate the lands, like in a long distance relationship... there are just to many mountains, hills and space between two people to have a relationship.
OR MAYBE, he literally means mountains and he does uphill drag races. And sometimes the hills just got so steep that the bike would flip backwards and he would get a bunch of scars, but they werent scars to him, they were medals of honor! Yeah ok im kidding, i only thought of that cause my dad said he use to do uphill drag races on his motorcycle when he was young...
Great song.. to me this song is about someone that was deeply in love. The relationship was intense, but it had obstacles (mountains). He is so hurt by the fact that she allowed the mountains to put an end to the relationship that he at first decided that he was going to bury his emotions (put them in his pocket) as the love ended so painfully. Later on he realizes that despite the pain, he can't keep his feelings in his pocket hidden away forever so he knows that he will eventually put himself out there again, in hopes the mountains don't win again.
I heard this song in the E.R. when I inverted my leg. Very fitting. Ooh you gotta love the pain.
This is one of the best songs that I have ever heard. The melody and sound is just amazing. My friends and I have had this debate though and I wanted to get others opinions, what do you think the mountains are?
If I remember correctly this was written by the late great Bobby Sheehan. A fabulous song writer that i think overall that only got credit in the genre and within the band.

This song as a whole I actually think is about not giving up. Love comes and goes, with everything there is pain... accept this and you will be okay. It's okay to be in pain, it's okay to mourn, it's okay to cry.

For me the mountains are those that say you are not to do this or that, you need to be strong in a time of mourning. You need to be a "man" So "Feel the Rain coming in, the mountains win again" might be a metaphor for holding in your feelings, the mountains bottle up your emotions in and when they do, they've won.
At least that's best explanation I can think of at the moment.
Probably the most powerful underrated songs ever.
RIP Bobby!!

This is my favorite song , I agree with Rhink on what the mountains are and i think that was a very intelligent thing to come up with. And i want to talk about the rest of the song but it just speaks for itself. No secret meanings.
Wow. I can't believe some of what I'm reading here. The mountains are his emotions. He's trying to hide them, but he can't, the mountains win again.
I think that like a lot of other Blues Traveler songs, this song has many, MANY meanings. There's the literal definition, which is about totally breaking down and surrendering to nature, kind of like losing in a relationship, then heading up into the Canadian Rockies with, like, his dog or something, and just going on a quest for solitude. Then there's the multiple possible explanations for what the mountains symbolize. To me, I think that all of you are right in that respect.
The mountain is an allusion to the Greek legend of Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a king punished by the Gods to spend eternity pushing a boulder up a mountain. Each time he would get the boulder to the top of the mountain it would roll back down and he would have to start all over. This is why impossible tasks are sometimes called Sisyphean. It makes sense in context because in a relationship after all the hard work, you often end up back at the bottom of the mountain.
Another interesting side note is that this is the only Blues Traveler song written by the late Bobby Sheehan alone. It is usually sung in concert as a tribute to him.
