Shooting Star Lyrics

Johnny was a school boy when he heard his first beatle song
Love me do i think it was. From there it didnt take him long
Got himself a guitar used to play it every night
Now he's in a rockn roll outfit and every things all right
Dont ya know

Johnny told his mama mama i'm goin away
I'm gonna hit the big time gonna be a big star some today
Mama came to the door with a teardrop in her eyes
Johnny said dont cry mama smile and wave goodbye
Dont ya know

Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
And all the world will love you just as long as long as you are

Johnny made a record went straight up to number one
Suddenly everyone loved to hear him sing his song
Watching the world go by, surprised it goes so fast.
Johnny looked around and said well i made the big time at last

Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
And all the world will love you just as long as long as you are

Johnny died one night, died in his bed
Bottle of whiskey sleeping tablets by his head
Johnny's life passed him by like a warm summer's day
If you listen to the wind you cand hear him play
Don't you know, don't you know

Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
And all the world will love you just as long as long as you are

I'm sure the song's not about Elvis. Hendrix is a good guess, but his name wasn't Johnny and Bonham didn't play guitar. I've always heard the song was about Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, but he didn't commit suicide. This song was written in 74-75 and the untimley deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin were still fresh on the mind of Paul Rodgers and Johnny is a fictional character about all of these legends.

@gap3857 this song is all about Hendrix. His name WAS Johnny. He was born under the name Johnny Allen Hendrix but his dad changed it because Jimi's mom was banging a man named Johnny

@mattgursky

Hendrix didn't die from a drug overdose. He died from hiatal hernia. While Jimi enjoyed the Beatles and played a wild version of Sgt. Peppers, he learned to play by ear from '50's songs. He gre up with his dad. The song was about a made up guy with the generic-good-old-fasioned-rock-n-roll name of JOHNNY. Not sure why that is so hard for people to accept.

@burningoldsage he died of a barbiturate OD/choked on his own vomit. Hiatal hernia, when it turns deadly, works differently.

@ Saga-- Can't be about Bonham because he died in 1980. This song came out in 1975. Not about Elvis either, because he passed in 1977. Most likely regards Hendrix. Could also be Jim Morrison if we want to start guessing.

Either way, it's essentially a generalized narrative of the characteristic rise and fall of musicians as they reach excesses. I think the point is, it doesn't really matter who it's about as you can apply it to any musician who has followed this trend.

Rather - the idea that fame is quite superficial; as a society we only see the external shell of the musician, sort of oblivious and over-assuming everything is fine and going perfectly. That in a sense the idealization of what we all could be; they've made it in life. The song is told from a third person perspective; almost like a close friend to the protagonist or a spectating fan. There's isn't really a degree of emotion in the lyrics themselves (in the narrator's voice there is, but not in what he's saying)-- it's very straightforward with the story which consequentially provokes confusion, anger, saddness, melancholy, disbelief, etc, in the friends, family, fanbase, and media when someone sporadically dies at their prime.

And of course, you have drugs and often time away from home as the lyrics describe...which aren't a good thing when prolonged. You see this in so many famous musicians because they become bored...between constantly touring and travelling, and need something to cope with their loneliness and curiosities. Of course, money isn't ever an issue for them. There's a degree of social detachment in becoming publicly idolized, from being disconnected from the standardized life of everyone else.

Great song, very evocative of the joy and sadness associated with losing someone. Also, for how simple of a song it is, it still remains incredibly unique and outstanding from many of the other cliche rock songs out there.

@vscaletta "Brian died one night, died in his bed. Bottle of whiskey, sleeping tablets at his head. Brian's life passed him by like a warm Summer's Day-listen to the wind-you can still hear him play" (Bridge)
