Bloody Ice Cream Lyrics

The Sylvia Plath story
Is told to girls who write
They want us to think
That to be a girl poet
Means you have to die

Who is it that told me all the girls who write must suicide?

I've another good one for you
We are turning cursive letters into knives

This is my favorite Bikini Kill song. I agree with heidismells, the last 2 lines are the best part. I think the last line is a reference to the movement in woman's writing. Cursive is seen as a feminine "girly" type of script -- very delicate and harmless. By turning the cursive into knives means they're fighting back, knives have a vicious, violent undertone (but in this case it's in a good way).

Kathleen's referring to classic women poets, and how their work was only recognized after their deaths. For example, writer Emily Dickinson.

Besides that, I agree with both ambiguous90 and nowayjosex. The ending is killer.

I totally take back the last comment I made. This is about the "Sylvia Plath effect" - basically, it states that women writers have a higher risk of suicide (Sylvia Plath killed herself by putting her head in an oven.) Kathleen's opposing that by saying that women writers don't have to go down that path.
