Unknown Tongue Lyrics

There was no light, shining through the window
As Margaret lie in bed
She was wearing her cotton pajamas
A crucifix above her head

She awoke from a dream
Her eyes were open
Her lips were moving in the dark

Speak to me in many voices
Make them all sound like one
Let me see your sacred mysteries
Reveal to me the Unknown Tongue

She put her hands upon her breasts
And they were small and hard and young
And everywhere she touched, she felt the fire
Waiting for the answer that must surely come

Is this the way to love?
Or is this just the way to die?

Speak to me in many voices
Make them all sound like one
Let me see your sacred mysteries
Reveal to me the Unknown Tongue

And then she took her father's razor
And watched it cut into her palm
She put her hand up to her mouth
To taste the blood so holy and warm

She got up in the morning
Put on her dress, and patent leather shoes
Ate her cereal, and kissed her mother
And caught the bus, and went to school..

Speak to me in many voices
Make them all sound like one
Let me see your sacred mysteries
Reveal to me the Unknown Tongue

Reveal to me, reveal to me
Reveal to me, reveal to me
Reveal to me! Reveal to me!!
Ah..hahahahahahahahahaha....

According to the NME article, the song "Unknown Tongue" is a true story about a girl that David Roter (co-author of the song) used to know. Apparently a nice Catholic girl, she had a fetish for cutting her big toe with a razor and drinking some of her blood. Of course, in the BOC song, the girl cuts her palm, not her toe.

@Cumaris Wow, I don't think anyone could ever have guessed that....but, BOC does have some very random and unusal meanings in so many of their songs,

An unknown tongue is a language that the listener does not understand. It is to be avoided because it serves no purpose.the song is about an adolesant teen becoming sexualy aware.

This is quite true. The telling is in the phrase "And everywhere she touched, she felt the fire Waiting for the answer that must surely come" Look at the very last word.

I think its pretty straight forward. Young proper catholic girl experimenting with masturbation and a little cutting. I think speaking in "unknown tongues" is a reference to orgasm as is the line "is this the way to love or just a way to die"

A story like The Exorcist, except that here the girl's possession goes unchecked. Check out the Tubular Bells soundalike at 2:05.

I was going to post this here. It seems to me that this song has so much untold.

A clitoris kind of looks like a little tongue.

I'm just gonna throw out that this makes me think of a girl performing some kind of demon summoning but I'm usually wrong.
