Dominance And Submission Lyrics

Oh yeah
It's been ten years, half my life
Just getting ready but then it was time
War page in the figures, radios appear
Midnight was the barrier, back in 1963

Each night, the covers were unfolded
Each night, It's Susy's turn to ride
While Charles, the one they call her brother
Covers on his eyes, murmurs in the background
It will be time

Oh yeah
Susan and her brother, Charles the grinning boy
Put me in the backseat, and they took me for a ride
Yeah, the radio was on, can't you dig the locomotion
Kingdoms of the radio, 45 R-P-M
Too much revolution then

Each night,
Each night, It's Susy's turn to ride
While Charles, the one they call her brother
Covers on his eyes, murmurs in the background
It will be time

It's past midnight said Charles the grinning boy
And looking at me greedily, said it's 1964

In times square now, the people do the polka
Dominance, submission, radios appear
New Year's eve, it was the final barrier
Dominance, submission, radios appear
We took you up and put you in the back seat
Dominance, submission, radios appear
Form year to year we looked out for the venture
Dominance, submission, radios appear
Dominance, submission

Actually, the B.O.C. website has "Each night the covers were unfolded" which is what it sounds like to me. The lyrics you received may have been written by a record exec.

From the BOC FAQ The song, "Dominance And Submission" is the true story of an automobile ride taken with Suzy and her brother ("Charles the grinning boy"), in which some unexpected sexual actions were suggested.

Well, the meaning I do not know, but I know the line quoted here, "Each night, the covers were unfolded" is wrong according to the printed lyrics I received in 1974. (All BOC albums came with an address on the back to which you could write for a copy of a green-bar print out.) On that print out the line reads, "Each night, the girls were in orbit," which is what it sounds like to me, as well. Obvsiously, there are references to the domination of the 45 single in the sixties.

According to Sandy Pearlman, this song is in reference to losing innocence around the time of the Beatles invasion of American music. Rock and Roll being a corrupter of our youth.

I heard the song is about television and being a slave to the TV. I heard this 5-10 years ago so I don't remember where I heard it from.

Its about both, the british invasion AND the new years eve ride... I like the guitar solos, the first one reminds me of early Beatles, then the last one is pure heavy metal. (at least by 70's definition of metal)

Sex in the backseat with Susy ,Charles and ? on New Years Eve 1964 with the radio on. Great tune, great everything. I love BOC's cryptic lyrics.

I honestly think it's about BDSM ,Urban dictionary defines BDSM as Bondage and discipline,Dominance and submission,Sadism and Masochism.

Charles the grinning boy = Ray Charles? You never see Ray Charles without that grin and then there is the line about 'covers on his eyes'. As we all know he was blind and always wore dark glasses. I don't have any theories about who Susy is, but the musical references are obvious. A not-so-obvious musical reference is 'can't you dig the locomotion'. The Loco-motion was a big hit first released in 1962, the same time frame as mentioned in the song.

45 RPM Too much revolutions, has to be about the rise of the long playing 33 1/3 records and album rock stations.
