Shackled Lyrics
For so long my life's been sewn up tight inside your hold
And it leaves me there without a place to call my own
I know now what shadows can see
There's no point in running 'less you run with me
It's half the distance to the open door
Before you cut me down
Again
Let me introduce you to the end
And I feel the cold wind blowing beneath my wings
It always leads me back to suffering
But I will soar until the wind whips me down
Leaves me beaten on unholy ground again
So tired now of paying my dues
I start out strong but then I always lose
It's half the distance before you leave me behind
It's such a waste of time
CHORUS
'Cause my shackles
You won't be
And my rapture
You won't believe
And deep inside you will bleed for me
So here I slave inside of a broken dream
Forever holding onto splitting seams
So take your piece and leave me alone to die
I don't need you to keep my faith alive
I know now what trouble can be
And why it follows me so easily
It's half the distance through the open door
Before you shut me down
Again
Let me introduce you to the end
CHORUS
Though you know you care
CHORUS
And my laughter
You won't hear
The faster
I disappear
And time will burn your eyes to tears
And it leaves me there without a place to call my own
There's no point in running 'less you run with me
It's half the distance to the open door
Before you cut me down
Again
Let me introduce you to the end
It always leads me back to suffering
But I will soar until the wind whips me down
Leaves me beaten on unholy ground again
I start out strong but then I always lose
It's half the distance before you leave me behind
It's such a waste of time
'Cause my shackles
You won't be
And my rapture
You won't believe
And deep inside you will bleed for me
Forever holding onto splitting seams
So take your piece and leave me alone to die
I don't need you to keep my faith alive
And why it follows me so easily
It's half the distance through the open door
Before you shut me down
Again
Let me introduce you to the end
You won't hear
The faster
I disappear
And time will burn your eyes to tears

you guys are all nuts. it obviously about the devil. For his betrayal god cut him off at the knees, banishing him to earth, and he turns his anger at humans, introducing us to "the end". it's a self-serving diatribe, in which the devil attempts to garner sympathy from the weak and from other evil forces, while at the same time attacking good people, justifying it with tales of his suffering and the bitter cold gripping his "wings". His antichrist's "rapture", designed to turn weak and greedy people against god, is his last desperate attempt at payback for his "suffering"

Bingo! I agree with your interpretation completely, DrGregHouse. The tipoff was when the lyrics mention wings - then it's going to be either angels or demons. And the rest of your explanation fully parses it out. Satan is on a tear right now, smart religious people know. He's down on the earth - actually he's confined to the "vicinity of the earth." And he wants to cause lots of confusion and trouble for anyone - after all, he's toast. He will die, it is a certainty. God has deemed him dead. So, going with his selfish manner, why...

So, going with his selfish manner, why would he want anyone else to live? Of course not! When these morons shoot people like at Mandalay Bay Casino, why don't they just take themselves out? Because, like their God Satan, they want to take innocent souls with them, too. They are either wittingly or unwittingly following their God, Satan.
i love this song! i think it's about someone who is trying to live his own life and find his way, but someone else is not letting him do everything his way, he feels stifled somwhow... "and deep inside you will bleed for me" the other person, although very demanding, and almost appears cold and disapproving, actually does love him on a deep level.
i first heard this song when my head was under a sink tryin to fix a leak :S lol was clearin my room out for christmas at uni and hadnt let the album play full before :D adore the song. think maybe it bout a fella finally wising up and leaving a yappy girl who had her claws in.<seen it many times> lol
Apparently the song was written in reference to Keith Kane breaking up with his girlfriend. And it must not have been going very well.
This is probably my favorite song on the album. Has a certain edge the other songs don't quite have. Too bad there aren't any songs with him at lead on "Go".
here's my interpretation. I'll try.
For so long my life's been sewn up tight inside your hold And it leaves me there without a place to call my own
obviously this song is about a guy who's life is being controlled by someone else. Probably a girl knowing this band. So I'll go with that. The guy has probably put a bunch of time and effort into the relationship and evidently the girl just isn't feeling it anymore. So she just cuts him off but he can't just do that too. He's still attached to her and she's still weaved into his life. He is lost without her presence.
I know now what shadows can see There's no point in running 'less you run with me It's half the distance to the open door Before you cut me down Again Let me introduce you to the end
He's trying to let go of her once and for all so he won't be haunted by her anymore. He's saying that he's ready to realize why she left him and how he can let her go. So he's going to end all the suffering that comes from her memory and such.
And I feel the cold wind blowing beneath my wings It always leads me back to suffering But I will soar until the wind whips me down Leaves me beaten on unholy ground again
He knows now that every time he thinks of her he gets blown down (depressed) so he's going to go in the opposite direction and leave it all behind.
So tired now of paying my dues I start out strong but then I always lose It's half the distance before you leave me behind It's such a waste of time
he's just tired of going through all the same thoughts about her and trying to get away from feeling bad about it. It's just a waste of time thinking about her
CHORUS 'Cause my shackles You won't be And my rapture You won't believe And deep inside you will bleed for me
he's telling her that she won't get him down because of what she did. And in the end she'll be sorry that she left him and he'll be better for it.
So here I slave inside of a broken dream Forever holding onto splitting seams So take your piece and leave me alone to die I don't need you to keep my faith alive
He's telling her to just leave for good so he never has to deal with it again. He doesn't need her or her memories anymore to get him down, or bring him back up for that matter.
I know now what trouble can be And why it follows me so easily It's half the distance through the open door Before you shut me down Again Let me introduce you to the end
CHORUS
Though you know you care
CHORUS
And my laughter You won't hear The faster I disappear And time will burn your eyes to tears
He's finally over it and he's happy. He knows she'll be sorry in the end
Yes, too bad he didn't sing on "Go". I like his voice, it's more of a hardcore rocker than pop/alternative artist. jbisasky, I agree with your interpretations of it.
I have always thought this song was about any relationship when handling mental illness. We try to conform, we try to be like everyone else, even though the roll does not fit. The soaring, the running away, all sound like a manic phase to me, but they never last.. They leave you beaten and broken. Anyone who has had a full manic episode will understand that it can feel like rapture, even when we know it is false. And why would we want to be chained. Unfortunately, when that high dies, then we are stuck inside, "holding on to splitting seams". Those around us all need thing, they want to make judgments and offer advise, most of which is not even close to applicable. That would be "take your piece and leave me alone to die."
The last verse is simple. It is when we finally find our own peace.
