Eagles – Hotel California Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about systemic dystopia and personal accountability. It's a cautionary tale that no matter what devil you dance with, be it sexual, drug, political, celebrity, corporate, gang, piracy, military, cult, or otherwise, there is a point at which you cannot turn back and are forever followed by the consequences of your particular vice. Aids, Unwed Parenthood, Loss of Privacy, Fear of Lawsuits, Fear of Death, Criminal Records, PTSD, Disappearances, all downsides of your temporary lust and greed for pleasure or money or power or popularity. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave...

Matthew Good Band – Rico Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a fun little song about an intelligent person looking at the life of one of these halfwit losers and wondering what it's like to be them. But also looking at the women that subject themselves to a life with such miscreants and trying to figure out why they hang around, sleep with and otherwise let themselves be used by them when they can do much better.

It's not a direct attack, it's much more tactful which is the true genius of the lyric. Matthew is putting himself into the role of Rico so that as Rico he can blatantly call attention to his own character flaws without appearing vindictive or mean spirited against the other Ricos of the world.

Not only that but it appeals to the Rico-like losers everyone grew up with, because they aren't conscientious enough to understand that the song isn't celebrating their lifestyle, but cleverly making a hilarious mockery of it. It's the ultimate insiders joke that goes over the heads of the very people it's poking fun at. And yet there is no real proof that it's not just harmless fun at someone's expense.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Black Balloon Lyrics 12 years ago
A guy grows up with a girl that want's to be a star, etc. , and everyone who knows her says she's gonna do great things. She is the same as him only if she where kneeling. He loves her but she's on a different path than he is. But she loves him despite this and he 'almost falls into the hole in her life' because they get along so well, but for their different life goals. Her aspirations are the black balloon. She moves away to LA or something following her black balloon. And everyone is sad too see her go(angels fall), including the guy. She turns a cold shoulder to him, because she's moved on(you get colder), and he thinks maybe she's met someone else(someones prayer). He eventually moves on, Starts a band and gets famous in his own right, and follows his balloon(I become), leaving behind a girl that loved him the same way as he loved the first girl, thus becoming what the first girl was to him when she left(what you became to me).

Vertical Horizon – Shackled Lyrics 12 years ago
you guys are all nuts. it obviously about the devil. For his betrayal god cut him off at the knees, banishing him to earth, and he turns his anger at humans, introducing us to "the end". it's a self-serving diatribe, in which the devil attempts to garner sympathy from the weak and from other evil forces, while at the same time attacking good people, justifying it with tales of his suffering and the bitter cold gripping his "wings". His antichrist's "rapture", designed to turn weak and greedy people against god, is his last desperate attempt at payback for his "suffering"

Better Than Ezra – Desperately Wanting Lyrics 12 years ago
well first off there's lyric problems 'then they ask what went wrong', is 'then they ask what we're on'.
'kicked it over and ran', is 'Kick it over again' and finally 'When you never had it right Well, you never had it right' is 'Well you never had A RIGHT, though you never had IT RIGHT'.

This song is about two friends who grew up together from a very young age. One becomes successful, the other had jokes for parents, goes through difficult times and becomes jaded. The more successful one (the one singing the song) is now desperately trying to get his friend to come to his/her senses and become the person she really is on the inside. He reminds him/her (in my mind its a her) what it was like when they were younger and had some fight left in them, because they were desperately searching for something. He asks her to face up to the people and the situations that broke her down, by kicking them in the face, and basically rejecting their right to do that to her. Show them they never really knew the real her, like her best friend did. The hope being that they both can return to the desperate search for the unknown, that they had both begun so many years ago.

Our Lady Peace – Naveed Lyrics 17 years ago
Come come Naveed...

Naveed means: the bearer of good news.
Lucifer means: the bearer of the light
See a pattern?

Are you there,
and is it comfortable?
Did you want to escape,
try to escape
the population?

I believe this is the right side of an internal struggle, Lucifer's dialogue with his Satanic counterpart, an
"Are ya happy now, Stupid?" kinda thing

The pressure's deceiving,
and for you par-ticu--larly
To let a young man die?
Let him die if he wants to,
Die if he wants to.

-The diatribe continues and death is discussed, but figuratively, dying as in a good person giving in to his evil tendencies.

I can't live here anymore
But It's hard when you reach for that floor
something that tears me inside,
so I can't go

-Satan speaks up and gives this pathetic excuse.

Brother are you there?
Tell me is it wonderful? oh,
Were you hoping to find,
Hoping to find,
something a little more?

-Lucifer's/Naveed's best friend(we'll call him Amigo for now) asking him if it was worth it. Getting angrier.

Counting down the hours
I need to know now
though the hands of time only rule this chapter
I'll have to try once again,
I'll have to try when I want to,
Try when I want to

-Amigo asking himself whether to save his friend, and eventually deciding that it's hopeless.

I can't live here anymore
But It's hard when you reach for that floor
something that tears me inside,
So I can't live here anymore
Anymore,
Any...more

-Lucifer has now become Satan and decides to leave.

There he's on his knees again, trying hard to understand,
Why Naveed would let a young man die

Amigo coping with his best friend's death, asking why Lucifer/Naveed would let himself die in place of Satan.

He thinks that he might break,
he reaches for that phone

Amigo Reaches out to his friends and leaves his bad feelings behind.

And then another day is gone
Oh another day is gone
Oh another day is

Is gone ( x 16 )

I can't live here anymore
But It's hard when you reach for that floor
something that tears me inside,
So I can't live here anymore

Years later, Amigo Recalls what his friend said to him before he left, and know that he made the right choice.

Our Lady Peace – The Birdman Lyrics 17 years ago
The Birdman is Satan. The song is about the weaklings that he preys upon. It is similar to Naveed Because Naveed was about the fallen angel that became satan, and how his own thoughts preyed on him. Now he's all grown up and evil and he's having fun.
