I have always thought this song was about any relationship when handling mental illness. We try to conform, we try to be like everyone else, even though the roll does not fit. The soaring, the running away, all sound like a manic phase to me, but they never last.. They leave you beaten and broken. Anyone who has had a full manic episode will understand that it can feel like rapture, even when we know it is false. And why would we want to be chained. Unfortunately, when that high dies, then we are stuck inside, "holding on to splitting seams". Those around us all need thing, they want to make judgments and offer advise, most of which is not even close to applicable. That would be "take your piece and leave me alone to die."
The last verse is simple. It is when we finally find our own peace.
