my take:

accept who you are. "gotta be what the nightmare made me." It's about realizing who you are, the true person created by whatever trials you have gone through. cut off the falseness and bullcrap, let it fall away, and accept who you are. "sweet baby?" people get to know and love/hate the person they see. but when you realize that you need to change, need to be who you are, these people tend to can get hurt, and often can't be a part of your life anymore. but you've got to be who you are. slice your way to honesty

I think this song's about going back to simplicity. Yeah he's hurting and lifes bad for him but he's found this girl and shes breaking him down in a good way making him himself again and even tho he feels like hes gotta be what his bad life has made him, in reality he loves how this girl is lookin after him n breaking him down to a simpler life where he can be his true self... but the girl wants something in return he cant give her. he just cares for himself and hes letting her do it to him pretending he doesnt like it.

Like shamandown, I'd agree that this song is about being yourself. He has to be what the nightmare made him, meaning that his struggles have defined him. He's being what he sees. He's also trying very hard to change, but no one seems to see that ("too much is made of what's in me, not enough of how I strive"). They all want sudden, dramatic results, which are rather unrealistic. It's breaking him down, along with everything else, because the expectations are too damned high. He wants them all to "just let it go."

I agree with the he is trying to change but in a different way. I think he is trying to change because he is seeing how fucked up he use to be and how he acted. I think I am probibly 80% right because he is asking himself how far did he really drift off from being himself? I think but im not positive is the part where he is saying bringing me down break me down sweet suger is he is actually talking to someone he is in a relationship with? Someone is breaking him down and he is realilzing that she is right and he is asking himself how far did he really drift from the original person he use to be. The nightmare part also goes alot with realilzing the fact that you did turn into an asshole and you have to live with it.
