It sounds to me like a guy meets a girl that totally rocks his world. He was afraid to show his true feelings, and still is. With her, he makes an attempt to change because she has qualities about her that he loves. He is willing to put in the effort for this one girl. He's willing to do anything to keep her, because she brought out the best in him.
My favourite Boston song by far. I can relate to it soooo much to.
This song, to me, is about a guy who is crazy about a girl but AWFUL at expressing his feelings. So he lashes out at her, gets angry & says things he really doesn't mean & then feels terrible for it. He's trying to make her understand that it's hard for him to express his feelings about her, & he's so sorry that he's hurt her with his anger, but it's the only emotion he can express.
I'll always love this song, though. During a break (well, it was only 3 days) he heard this song on his way home & it caused him to call me crying & begging me to take him back. That was years ago & now we're gonna be married =]

In my opinion, this sounds like the guy is friends with a girl. He's finding out that the feelings are becoming more and he's falling for her. After trying to hide his feelings, he finally tells her the truth.
I can also see it about a guy meeting a girl and wanting to be with her.
This is one of my favorite songs from these guys, especially the beginning.
This is one of those songs that I could see myself dedicating to a girlfriend or wife in the future on her favorite radio station. Being the shy and quiet type, I can relate to Delp's lyrics in this song. It has a pretty straightforward meaning; this girl (let's call her Amanda) doesn't even have to say anything around (let's call him David) - her mere presence is capable of bringing out the best of David and triggering a feeling he's never felt before deep within his heart. Though David struggles with his emotions, it just goes to show that, no matter how much of a "lady's man" reputation that's burdened on your shoulders, there will always be that one girl who can bring you to your knees.
