More Than A Feeling Lyrics
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away
(More than a feeling)
When I hear that old song they used to play
(More than a feeling)
And I begin dreaming
(More than a feeling)
And I see my Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet, I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky
(More than a feeling)
When I hear that old song they used to play
(More than a feeling)
And I begin dreaming
(More than a feeling)
And I see my Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away
I hide in my music, forget the day,
And dream of a girl I used to know,
I close my eyes and she slips away,
She slips away...
(More than a feeling)
When I hear that old song they used to play
(More than a feeling)
And I begin dreaming
(More than a feeling)
I see my Marianne walk away...

Awesome tune! Boston's greatest, hands down. I thinks it's about how a song can bring back bittersweet memories & help us escape reality at the same time. Whenever I hear it, I think of a girl I had a crush on many years ago. (Her name wasn't Marianne, but that's beside the point.) I was too shy at the time to even ask her out. She started dating someone else & she eventually married him. Last I heard, she was still married to him. "...And dream of a girl I used to know/ I closed my eyes and she slipped away/ She slipped away/ She slipped away" Yep, she slipped away from me. Well, life goes on.

Clearly one of the greatest rock songs of all time.
Brad Delp's voice was simply untouchable. Powerful yet beautiful with an amazing range and phenomenal timbre. In my book he's the greatest rock vocalist ever.
@phantomlaw I would like to add that I think the ending of More Than a Feeling is one of the most beautifully powerful 45 seconds in the history of rock music. Delp's high note at "she slipped awaaay" is obviously famous, but the build up that follows immediately after with the one extra bar and the double-timing on the drums before hitting that famous riff one last time, with its deep warm sound while giving that extra sustain on the top note of the guitar lead, then just holding that chorus in the background to the end, is completely...

On Oct 22,1976, we went to see Black Sabbath, Boston opened for them. When they played it was like nothing we ever heard before, my friends, my girlfriend, my brother, and I were mesmerized, this band was HOT. The concert was 1 day before Boston released there first album, so this was a completely new sound. More Than A Feeling was the sound track for my Junior year of High School, and My girlfriend Kay and I was so in love, we were to be married after high school, and when we heard this song were thought we had "More than a feeling", a higher love. I went to basic training, and Technical School for the Air Force, and while I was gone Kay married someone else, so much for that eternal love. I hadn't really listed to the lyrics of the song till after her wedding. Later she came by to pick up some stuff from my mom's while I was on leave. We said our goodbyes, she walked off into the cold day, and the line "I saw my Marianne walking away" went through my mind. Every time I hear this song I see her walking down the street.
An update to this story. Kay contacted me on classmates, it took me 5 years to answer her back. I apologized for taking so long to reply, she was just glad to hear from me. We exchanged histories, she had it rough, I felt bad for being mad for so long. We wrote each other a couple of times, then the emails stopped. I found out she died. I was glad we caught up with each other, but I've lost her again, but I know she's in a better place. she said I...

I love Boston!!!
And you should. They had the top debut album of all time! And if you were in high school during the height of the band's fame, Boston would probably be one of your favorite bands! Great song BTW.

Well the comparison is very odd seeing as NSYNC covered this song...... for that they should be kicked in the junk and then killed. Boston is a great band no matter their background.

A landmark song of the 70's. The song is the perfect match of guitars and vocal harmonies that reflected the high production values and complexity of songs of the early too mid seventies before the age of disco and punk.
Yes. Thank you for being articulate and concise. Your comment shines like a diamond embedded in a garbage heap. I'm serious. And I love Boston.

"More Than a Feeling" is simply one of those good old rock songs based on the unbreakable bond with events that later had a great effect on a person's life. The narrator one morning wakes up and puts on his radio, and this is when he hears a song that he associated an earlier occurrence with and soon starts dreaming back, until the dreams starts fading away, or as he chooses to express it, as he tries to personalize the events, they start "walking away". May it be about an old girl Tom loved more than nothing else or something else in that style, but the song rocks.

what are you talking about maxpower? How can you compare a great band such as Boston, to the backdoor boys or NSYNC? For starters, Boston was around way before those litle boy band faggots, and second of all, the two types of music are totally different! That makes me sick that you would compare them.
i agree. although aside from the fact that it is about brad delp and his "lonely soul" escaping his life through music does anybody have a clue who marianne is? its actually marianne from gilligans island believe it or not. R.I.P. Brad

@vipergt196 I agree with you that NSYNC is a terrible band, and that Boston is far superior. However, I would like to respectfully request that you not use the word 'faggot', as it is vulgar and analogous to the 'n' word for African Americans. Please continue posting your opinions, just don't use terms that objectify and dehumanize gay people, especially if you're applying them to a band as horrible as NSYNC. As part of the LGBTQ+ community, I would like to ask that you not compare us to that band and wish you a good day. Thank you!

"i agree. although aside from the fact that it is about brad delp and his "lonely soul" escaping his life through music does anybody have a clue who marianne is? its actually marianne from gilligans island believe it or not." Interestingly enough, this kind of plays into my own turn of the song (as a woman). Marianne symbolizing a wholesomeness and beauty that one loses through years and experience. Also losing the feeling of being closer to the Divine (Mary). I see my Marianne walking away - a girl I used to know.... :)
