Now if you're feelin' kinda low 'bout the dues you've been paying
Future's coming much too slow
And you want to run but somehow you just keep on stayin'
Can't decide on which way to go
Yeah, yeah, yeah

I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind, yeah, whoa

Now you're climbin' to the top of the company ladder
Hope it doesn't take too long
Can'tcha you see there'll come a day when it won't matter?
Come a day when you'll be gone, whoa

I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind

Take a look ahead, take a look ahead, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Now everybody's got advice they just keep on givin'
Doesn't mean too much to me
Lots of people out to make-believe they're livin'
Can't decide who they should be, whoa

I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind

Take a look ahead, take a look ahead, look ahead

Boston is hands down the best band i've ever listened too, and this song is hands down the best song i've ever listened to. Bostons sound was/is so original and amazing

They're just talking about the drive to the top, the rat race, and how pointless it is. Great song.

This song was written by Tom Scholz of Boston around the time he was working for Polaroid Corporation. Tom was a smart guy and had an engineering degree from MIT. You can hear in this song how he was struggling against the predictability and structure of corporate life. Ultimately, the song and the band rejects the materialism that surrounds them. "I don't care if I get behind." He is saying life is not about keeping up with the Joneses or sticking to a prescribed path, but rather about creating and obtaining peace of mind rather than material or career success. Ultimately, Boston achieved both.

The message is still applicable today. Many Americans are just as materialistic and uncreative as ever. People have a fit over a tiny tax increase for people making over 450K a year. Come on.

It's a great song. The melody, beat and lyrics are perfect and work well together.

I think all of you have pretty much covered the meaning...all I can say is it may not be the world's hardest guitar solo ever, but it's still my favorite (next to the one in "My Sharona"). There's just something almost emotional about it. I'm not sure, but in any case, it's a beautiful song and the lyrics have a very good meaning!

This song is awesome. It has to be my favorite song by Boston, too.

I believe the message within this song has to do with a clash between personality types A and B-psychological terms describing frame behaviors of certain people. Type A personalities are driven, the stop-for-nothing type, these are the achievers, the CEOs. Unfortunately, they suffer heart attacks frequently, for example. Type B people are the laid back types, they don't care if they climb to the top as much, just as long as they have peace of mind.
