The Sad Punk Lyrics

I smell smoke
that comes from a gun
named extintion
it was a long time ago
could have happened to anyone
he was struck by a bullet
and he melted into fluid named extintion
one thousand miles an hour
i'm just like anyone
i want to feel
the road of tar beneath the wheel named extinction
and evolving from the sea
would no be too much time for me
to walk beside you in the sun
i read something
about a son of a gun
named extinction.

i get it i get it i get it! put the two theories (the commercialized punk and the dinosaur thing) together and what do you have? punk=dinosaur. dinosaurs (punk) is now made into crude oil that is sought after huge companies in order for them to make lots of money. like, long ago, music used to be real and true and not fake and marketed. but that was shot down and it melted into a fluid named commercialized rock bands posing as punk to sell to a marketable audience. LONG LIVE THE PIXIES!

I read an interview with Frank where he said it was about how ridiculous the punk rock scene was, how rigid scenesters are about "selling out" and what's hip...I guess he was just making fun of punk kids, which is always fun cuz they set themselves up for it so easily

Well, Im into Punk rock to the max, and yes what I wear is "Punkish" But dress has nothing to do with it. Its all in the beliefs and attitude. If I looked any other way, I would feel fake. BTW Punk is not dead....it just sucks now. Thanks to TV and radio. But ithe true form still lives in small town shows and underground.

@zero1718 I hear your grievance, but 'punk' is a term created by the media. The bands labelled as such were originally the most creative and open-minded around, until the media told us all what it was 'supposed' to be about. So 'punk' never lived to begin with in order for it to die. The media stopped caring and moved onto the next story, that's all, so in essence, punk never really existed

why are people so close minded? why cant people just be people.... i dont understand this whole labeling thing... all it does is bring hostility.

@trajikclown I agree with you, but that's how language operates: it's a labelling system, or a system of labels

everyone has to label everyone. You're a liar if you say you don't label or judge because it's just impossible to live without that basic instinct. People become punk and dress punk because they want to be part of that scene, yeah they may like the music but no-ones making them adopt the dress. I think this song is about how punk culture is so easily led by whatever is seen as most rebellious.

@muchthanmore True, because we're all 'prejudiced'

i have read in an interview with Frank Black that the song is about a kid stepping in a dinasour's foot print. Obviously this doesnt really work out with most of the lyrics. Im guessing the song is actually about a number of things(murder, punk, dinosaur foot prints).

Y'think?

Each portion seems to be about something being wiped out. The part about melting int oa fluid and about being covered in road and evolving from the sea are probably about dinosaurs. MAybe the dinosaur thing's some kind of referrence to things that were once great, then were wiped out over time, but were always at least remembered as having been great, meaning the punk scene in this case.

@shadowwiththeeyes Or, it could be in reference to the entire album's theme of being about aliens. Aliens could have wiped out the dinosaurs and hence the oil and the other aftereffects. Just a thought

It's about how we're all driving around in the sad punk known as the dinosaur. While there are plenty of theories, there isn't really a "smoking gun" for what caused dinosaurs to die altogether. But we still "smell smoke" from cars which run on fossil fuels and drive on roads of tar, despite dinosaurs being extinct.

"and evolving from the sea would no be too much time for me to walk beside you in the sun"

This is a theme throughout Charles' music. Evolution and our aquatic fraternity.

I think he ends the song with "I read something about a SON of a gun named extinction" which could be commenting on environmental factors that might lead to our own extinction. Like, with the dinosaurs, there was a "gun named extinction" that wiped them out. Now he has read something about "a son of a gun named extinction" or the next big live wiper-outer.

@edbanky If you ever find it (and I can't remember the magazine I read it in), there's an interview Siouxsie Sioux made a comment about the album and 'The Sad Punk' song in 1992. It was apparently to do with Kim Deal telling her what the song was really about. It was very much nothing like what people seem to think it's about in these comments, either. And I was utterly impressed
