I smell smoke that comes from a gun
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named
It was a long time ago, could have happened to anyone
He was struck by a bullet and he melted into fluid
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named
Extinction
One thousand miles an hour, I'm just like anyone
I want to feel the road of tar beneath the wheel
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named
And evolving from the sea would no be too much time for me
To walk beside you in the sun
I read something about a son of a gun
Named extinction
Extinction
Extinction
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named
It was a long time ago, could have happened to anyone
He was struck by a bullet and he melted into fluid
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named
Extinction
One thousand miles an hour, I'm just like anyone
I want to feel the road of tar beneath the wheel
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named extinction
Named
And evolving from the sea would no be too much time for me
To walk beside you in the sun

put the two theories (the commercialized punk and the dinosaur thing) together and what do you have?
punk=dinosaur.
dinosaurs (punk) is now made into crude oil that is sought after huge companies in order for them to make lots of money.
like, long ago, music used to be real and true and not fake and marketed. but that was shot down and it melted into a fluid named commercialized rock bands posing as punk to sell to a marketable audience.
LONG LIVE THE PIXIES!
"and evolving from the sea
would no be too much time for me
to walk beside you in the sun"
This is a theme throughout Charles' music. Evolution and our aquatic fraternity.
I think he ends the song with "I read something about a SON of a gun named extinction" which could be commenting on environmental factors that might lead to our own extinction. Like, with the dinosaurs, there was a "gun named extinction" that wiped them out. Now he has read something about "a son of a gun named extinction" or the next big live wiper-outer.
You're a liar if you say you don't label or judge because it's just impossible to live without that basic instinct.
People become punk and dress punk because they want to be part of that scene, yeah they may like the music but no-ones making them adopt the dress. I think this song is about how punk culture is so easily led by whatever is seen as most rebellious.
Each portion seems to be about something being wiped out. The part about melting int oa fluid and about being covered in road and evolving from the sea are probably about dinosaurs. MAybe the dinosaur thing's some kind of referrence to things that were once great, then were wiped out over time, but were always at least remembered as having been great, meaning the punk scene in this case.
