I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Hardly awake here. If that says enough.
Your love doesn't take here. Mine turns to dust.
If this means anything. It doesn't mean enough
I've done everything. And I'm still broken up
I try not to fight. I just try to understand.
You define what's important to me.
What's left to decide. What's left to understand.
Hearts are just toys here. Mine's been played enough
Quiet just makes noise here. My volume's up.
If this means anything at all.
It doesn't close to mean enough.
Cause I've done everything
And I'm still broken up.
I try not to fight. I just try to understand.
You define what's important to me.
What's left to decide. What's left to understand.
As far as I can tell, you're not happy at all.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
awwww he knows she's not happy and even though she is the world to him he knows he has to let her go. sniff I think I'm going to cry!
Hearts are just toys her. Mine's been played enough..... says it all!!!! enought said.
definitely one of my favorite time spent driving songs...'you define what's important to me.' i love that line.
this band is fucking amazing, i want to see them live! ROCK ON!
wow... i know exactly how that guy felt... take what sentimentalf0ol said, but reverse it where the girl knows he isn't happy etc etc :\
I only wish you could make me understand. I only pray one day, I will. But in the meantime, I'll be here dying. You've made me, you define me, and that's what hurts the most. For you, this doesn't mean enough. Not close to enough. L.O.C: 'You define what's important to me.'
this is my reason for the screen name. and a definition of my emotions. feelings greater than words can express exude from jon's voice when he sings "here with you". the words enhance the emotion, and enhance the meaning. you can tell from every aspect: lyrics, instrumentals and vocals that pain is felt. this is why i adore TSD as much as i do. lines 3-6 are my favorite. this would be track #1 on the "soundtrack of jenn's life"..its people like him that make me want to write. simply amazing.
ALSO- i love the use of paradox. and the "quiet just makes noise here" like is awesome. just had to note that.
This song is soo great
i agree. one of my favorite songs.
