The Air-Conditioned Nightmare Lyrics

Inside of me today
There is no one
Only asteroids and empty space
A waste

...They're looking through the windows at me...

Get me out of this air-conditioned nightmare
Rots your brain just like a catchy tune, yeah
You will hate life more than life hates you

Happiness is your illness in an air-conditioned nightmare

...Burn all your mementos of me...

Walkin' on air
Up from the wheelchair
I'll find the suicide
That I deserve

Walkin' on sand
Forgotten where I am
But it's so comfortable
Here in the sun...

I only see rainbows
Now that the bandages are gone
Through my window, there

From the skyscrapers
Down to the submarines

Birds and fairies
Sanctuaries
Atop the rolling hills of hell

These words are sledgehammers
Of truth
That pound the iron heart
Of sin

Bloody smiling
Vandalizing
My wet dream is drying up...

Where's my rainbow?
Where's my halo?

There's my halo!

Something about rehab in California maybe...

Removing the bandages (like your cured)...and seeing only rainbows (good things) even though your still in Hell.

These words are truth to shatter your sinful iron (hard) heart. And see it for what it is...get the hell out if you want to stop the cycle of emptiness and drug taking to fill the voids in your life.

My 2 cents...the whole album could be a big fuck you ! to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers Californication album, the thing that's been happening between them...

My Interpretation

I get the feeling It's about old people and dementia and suicide.

Okay this might sound crazy, but the way I've always interpreted this song is based of a thing I read a while back that said it was essentially using a nursing home as a metaphor for hell, or at least just comparing the two...

This seems to be about suicide. I read an analysis somewhere that described it as some sort of cycle. Like, at the beginning, he is overcome by emptiness and attempts to kill himself, is saved, taken to a mental hospital and recuperates, only to fall back into his "hell" as it were and eventually try it again, most likely succeeding, as noted in the eerily cheerful final three lines in the song.

dunno about it's meaning... but it reminds of a sentence that i see written on some walls here in Portugal "The air condicioner kills people" (in portuguese: "O ar condicionado mata as pessoas").

and since Mike Patton is such a huge Portugal fan plus the fact of he singing "These words are sledgehammers Of truth" + "Here in the sun...", i like to think that he got the idea for this song walking around the path i do everytime to go to school.

i think this song is from the point of view of someone who has committed suicide. the lines in the beging, "inside of me today there is no one" is patton's way of saying that the actual person or soul of the person who has once lived in this body is now gone and only filled with "empty space."

"there looking throught the windows at me" could mean that someone has found his body. i prepose it was a hanging from the lines "walking on air, up from the wheelchair, ill find the suicide, that i deserve." walking on air is his body spasming as he dies.

now he looks over the world he has left from the hills of hell, and wishes for salvation, or wants a "halo"

bacon, some nice ideas but maybe, walking on air is his soul walking up to heaven? makes a bit more sense to me than his body spasming :S
