I was lame
I was nothing
'Till you came
You said 'Babe,
Make you sing
Make you feel
Like some queen'
To your home and mine'
Lord, he hooked me
Fish hook and line
With a halo of deep black
'Til my love made me gag
Call him Daddy, take my hand
To your home and mine'
Good Lord, he hooked me
Fish hook and line
Oh higher
Oh beautful
Oh higher
Oh beautiful
Oh higher
Left with nothing but his stain
'Daddy your maid, she can't sing
She can't feel, she's no queen!'
To your home and mine'
Lord he hooked me
Fish hook and line
To your home and mine'
Good lord he hooked me
'Leen out of time
i think that the character, kathleen, was sweet talked by a man, thus, "hooked," like a fish. (perhaps she's insinuating that she's going to be ruined by the expireince, much like the fish will die for consumption.)
i guess the usage of hook/hooked could show addiction. perhaps she's addicted to this man because he said so many sweet things. the sweet things he said, of course, are proven to be false, when it's pointed out that kathleen can't sing and isn't a queen. the man simply said things to sleep with her (nothing left but his stain).
his stain could either be left physically on the sheets, or it could be an emotional or pyschological stain. he might stain her thinking or self esteem.
love this song, love this woman.

...pretty sure I fucking love everything about pj's artwork
can't believe there's been no comments on this. one of my favorite songs of hers. don't ask me what it's about though.
and rode in - barking mad TEMPT my love... make me gag!
Hmm... I'm thinking there's reference to The Phantom of the Opera. Heroine's name is Kathleen, and during one song the Phantom tells her to keep singing, and sing higher. If you look at the lyrics to a lot of the songs, he does quite a bit of sweet-talking. This could be some kind of alternate-ending to the story or a different interpretation.
I love the way she references literature and works and things that already exist when she writes her songs.
