Synapse Lyrics

I don't mind this, deaf again
Just a skinfull, what we choose to forget
Thinking you know, thinking you see all sides
Crossing a stone from your hand, yeah right

Hell is where the heart is, synapse again
There's nothing more I can do, I haven't done again
I never wanted nothing wrong, taking a cue from seven days
I'll bet you never listened, burning holes in all your clothes

Razorblade suitcase, all the tricks of the trade
Favourite ways you can lose, favourite ways you can hate
Hell is where the heart is, synapse again
Nothing more I can do, I haven't done again, I haven't done again

I never wanted nothing wrong, taking a cue from better days.
I'll bet you never glistened, burning holes in all your clothes.
Burning holes in all your clothes

Hell is where the heart is, synapse again
There's nothing more I can do, I haven't done again
Hell is where the heart is, where the heart is, where the heart is

This song, which I consider to be the best song of Bush and one of the greatest of all times, is highly underated by non-real-fans. I think this song is about drugs. "casting a stone from your hand" clearly sounds like picking yourself with a heroin or other shit needle. In a way, you get to be stoned from something you cast from your hand... Also, the Razorblade suitcase, is something some high class junkies (really!) use to keep the spoons, needles, pipes, and other stuff they use to get high. Also, it seems Gavin (or the guy in the song) doesn't mind to look like a human rag if the drugs get him to forget the bad things in his life...

I don't think this has anything to do with drugs but in fact about self appointed righteous people who try to "save" people from hell but don't really understand what it really means to be good and righteous. Here's why I interpret it this way:

I don't mind this Barefoot again [i've lost it all but I don't mind. Not exactly sure what that means, maybe it means starting all over with a new social group]

Just a skin full What we choose to forget ["they" just have a superficial amount (skin full) of what it really means to be good. Ie they just seem good from the outside. And conveniently, that "good" quality is something that they choose to forget]

Thinking you know Thinking you see all sides [these people think they know everything or they think they are absolutely right]

Casting a stone from your hand Yeah right [those that have not sinned may caste the first stone. Ie they think they are better and judge you. The "yeah right" is sarcastic in that those people are not sinnless even though they caste stones from their hands]

Hell is where the heart is Synapse again [the theme of the song. Hell is where you heart and thoughts are. I.e. Synapse represents your brain working, in this case in a negative and hellish way]

Nothing more I can do I have not done again [cant do anything to make these "righteous" people understand their ways that hasn't already been tried before]

Only worded nothing wrong Taking a cue from seven days [not 100% sure but maybe the righteous are perfect in words but not in sincerity. And they take their cue from religious groups like the "seven day Adventist" who go door to door "saving" people.]

I bet you never listen Burning holes in all your clothes [these righteous people never listen. They just like to hear themselves talk. And since their behavior is hellish, they are burning holes in their close from fire inside them]

Razorblade suitcase All the tricks of the trade [these people carry a razor blade suitcase with tricks and techniques to dupe normal folk]

Favorite ways you can lose Favorite ways you can hate [this suitcase has ways to lose and ways to hate]

[the rest just repeats:]

Hell is where the heart is Synapse again Nothing more I can do I haven't done again I haven't done again

i'm not so sure what gavin was trying to get across here, but his lyrics are beautiful, "hell is where the heart is," has got to be the sweetest line ever...

schumie in addition to your interpretation - i think that the line Hell is Where the Heart Is, Synapse Again - is really important to the mood Gavin's trying to get about this druggie.

It sounds like not trying to forget the bad things in his life but more like everything - all emotions from his life. And there's nothing more he can do - to cure his depression from his range of emotions - that he hasn't done already. He's tried everything and the only out Heroin.

SYNAPSE the place that heroin works on it blocks the synaptic gap as do all opiates to kill the pain

"synapse" is the gap between neurons. A neuron is an independent nerve unit. Maybe this song is talking about these scientific terms in terms of a relationship.
