4 A.M. Lyrics
and found that there were none
I blame my father for the wasted years
we hardly talked
I never thought I would forget this hate
then a phone call made me realize
I'm wrong
If I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along
just like the sunny days that
we ignore because
we're all dumb & jaded
and I hope to God I figure out
what's wrong
not thinking
just sinking in this box
I blame myself for being too much
like somebody else
I never thought I would just
bend this way
then a phone call made me realize
I'm wrong

4am has a double meaning. He wrote it at 4 a.m. and 'for A.M.', his father's initials.
He says he wrote the chords and lyrics in about five minutes.

The message behind the song is pretty obvious, but you probably didn't know that Raine wrote this song after having a dream that his father was in the hospital dying. In the dream, he didn't make it to the hospital in time to say I love you. So in the song he says if he doesn't make it, if it really happens, know that I've always loved you although we haven't really talked alot.

I used to think this song was about a suicidal person who blamed his father for keeping him (the speaker) and a significant other/friend apart. "If I don't make it" is sort of like, "If I don't make it out of this depression (if I kill myself), know that I loved you all along." He hopes he can figure out why he's so depressed before he does something drastic.
I realize now that the song is aimed toward the speaker's father, but I guess my adolescent mind thought every song was about a Very Depressed Person, ha ha.

tool.freak is absouletly right. I always thought it was about a kid who didnt get along with his father but really inside he loved him so after he heard he died ( "a phone call made me realize I'm wrong", maybe someone called him to tell him his father died). The line "Sunny days that we ignored because we're all dumb and jaded" means that they spent all their time fighting and not noticing what a nice day it was. Well there a lot of line's that could prove my meaning right if you read it. Anyways it a really great song and its really good to listen to if your sad.

i love olp, and always have. i have listened over and over to these lyrics, and the lyrics to all there songs. I met them recently, er jeremy and steve anyway, and they were such cool, down to earth ppl. i swear that between these lyrics and their personalities, they are a pretty much perfect beings.

this is my favourite olp song and maybe even my favourite song in the world... it's so moving and the pain in raine's voice just makes it sound so beautiful...

this song is really good. i could listen to our lady peace all day! :) they're just wicked! oi

this is my favorite song of all time of theirs, this and theif. and it's so moving when u see him do it live the emotion that he puts behind it. it's amazing. OLP rox my sox :)

beautiful song. i love olp they're the greatest band in the world. this is probably their last great song until somewhere out there

i completely agree with everything that everyone has said about this song so there's no need to repeat it. i just thought i'd say that on the 4th of july i went up to milwaukee, WI to see them at Summerfest and it was just unbelievable (my 2nd time). i love how he lets the crowd sing a whole song, and this was the song that he chose. i was really glad that he did because it means so much to me. whenever i listen to OLP my heart swells with love, appreciation, and respect. and seeing them live is a very moving experience. everyone should when they get the chance. heh, i even got steve and jeremy to sign my shoes afterwards. raine and duncan didnt come out though :( but there's always the chicago show! lol.
