Eye on the Finish Line Lyrics

Such an awful, tragic night
Though I've only done what's right
Even with my conscience clear
I can't help this flood of tears

I've got my eye on the finish line

Though I've been striving for their good
I will be misunderstood
Even my own darling dear
Misconstrued what was so clear

Given the time, I think she would have understood
That it was for the greater good
Soon I will meet her at our mansion in the sky
Leaving this wicked world behind

It's strange that it should end this way
But martyrs never have a say

I'm suprised that more people haven't posted for this song, I think it's probably my favorite one on Winners Never Quit.

The song is sad but in a really sick twisted way. I mean he isn't sorry for what he did at all but blames his wife and others for not understanding and claims himself a martyr. He just got finished killing his wife!

the way he says "i've got my eye on the finish line" is kinda of creepy, lol, but all in all this is a good song, and pedro is amazing

I get the vibe that he killed his wife/lover, but maybe she just died another way. In either case, he's contemplating his suicide following her death.

I've got that killing idea too, looking at it from the 'Winners Never Quit-perspective'

When i first heard this song, i hadn't taken into consideration the story around which the album revolves. I thought it was as if quoting Christ. "Though I've been striving for their good, i will be misunderstood..." and so on. This seems especially apparent when considering Bazaan's earlier works, a lot of which proclaim his Christian faith directly. But considering the themes of everything after Winners Never Quit, i almost wonder if he were combining the two. I wonder if this entire album is written as if quoting God (i.e. Christ, in Bazaan's case at least) and questioning his purpose. To me the entire album seems to question the universal nature of God. But maybe we weren't supposed to read into it that far. Maybe it's just a meaningless story.

Without having heard the whole album, and with little idea of any intended meaning for this song, I just hear the sad rendition of some sort of sacrifice - especially with lines like "Though I've been striving for their good, I will be misunderstood". I can't see the part where the narrator killed his wife/lover, maybe she just got caught in the crossfire of something bigger than both of them...
