Big Trucks Lyrics

"Dad, Dad, why did you let that man
Push you around like that?
You should have beat him down, down to the ground
Down to the ground for that"

He said, "Son, you're still young
And you always jump the gun
There's real people in the big, big trucks
That you flip off when they get in your way
You get so hacked that you pay no mind
To the great big sign that says Oversize Load
You really think they can go as fast as you
In your '87 Trans AM?
They know you're in a terrible rush
They're going just as fast, as fast as they can"

"Dad, Dad, I really don't understand
What driving big trucks has to do with that man
You should have taught him a lesson about being rude
About talking to you with such an attitude"

"Son you're still young
And you always jump the gun
There's real people in the big, big trucks
That you flip off when they get in your way
You get so hacked that you pay no mind
To the great big sign that says Oversize Load
You really think they can go as fast as you
In your '87 Trans AM?
They know you're in such a terrible rush
They're going just as fast, as fast as they can"

Awesome song, i think hes talking about selfishness and how the whole world shouldn't revolve around you...

I feel this song is preaching the Golden Rule: Treat others how you want to be treated. I love the way David uses metaphors in his songs.

this article contains the following statement:

Basically, a young man is asking his dad why he lets people push him around. His answer, albeit a cryptic statement about big trucks and a Trans-Am is simply that you can’t expect the rest of the world to act like they know Christ. You can’t expect the people around you, with their heavy burdens to treat you the way you would treat them, since your load has been taken off of you.

so, a clever song, by a clever band. pedro forever.

I think its kinda saying something about those less fortunate in a way. The great big sign that says oversized load is to me a burden or a handicap of some sort and the trans am means that he is more well off. Until we think maturly we get real irritated real easy when someones slowing us down but we need to respect that we're all human, some of us have it harder so lets make em feel better, cause they're trying just as hard, as hard as they can. I like this song a lot cause its got a great maessage as usual for pedro but its also so lively and peppy.

a beautiful song, a fun song, a meaningful song, a simple song, a catchy song, a well-written song, a metaphorically song... the list goes on but this is all around the best song david bazan's ever written. a definitive "beginner's guide to pedro the lion."

To me, this song is a lesson in patience, the son, who, because he is young "jumps the gun" unlike the father.

Obviously the son wants his father to teach another person a lesson for insulting him (maybe because he is a Christian, who knows?) but the father uses the metaphor of being stuck behind a truck on the road. Sure, you might be in a rush, but the driver can't go as fast as you. You can't just lose your temper over something so trivial.

I agree with most, I don't see it as an overtly religious theme, but more of a message of maturity. As people get older and gain that patience/maturity to understand that the world doesn't revolve around just ourselves, we can appreciate others more.
